In Chapter 13 of To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus attempts to explain what it means to be a Finch. At the beginning of the chapter, Jem and Scout are surprised to see Aunt Alexandra sitting on their front porch. When Scout asks why Aunt Alexandra is present in their household, she said it would be beneficial to have some “feminine influence”. As the chapter progresses, it is evident Atticus invited Aunt Alexandra to stay with them for a period of time to teach them how members of the Finch family should behave. For example, on Sunday, Scout describes Aunt Alexandra to be “positively irritable”, as she is wearing a dress “formidable” from any angle. Scout is greatly encouraged by Aunt Alexandra to follow her example and act like a “little lady”.
