Female Sports

The standard way of thinking about sports has it that people tend to think of male sports first. This is no surprise seeing how men sports are portrayed and televised more. On average, people are more likely to be able to name male athletes before they can name female athletes. In addition, male sports have a larger audience. Women are at a disadvantage as a result of the sports world revolving around male sports. Female sports are second to male sport: not a close second, but a default second. The real question is how this trend came about. How did the male sports surpass female sports to the point that the imbalance required artificial equality as an attempt to make male and female sports equal? The imbalance results from societal influences …show more content…
Female athletes make substantially less than male athletes. The benchwarmers for the NBA make “$500,000, more than 10 times greater than the minimum annual salary for a WNBA player...which was $36,470”(Dubois). Supporting a family on a professional women’s basketball salary would place allow for a middle to lower class life style, while NBA player are some of the most wealthy people. Essentially, it means that men can be professional athletes and women cannot. A woman would need a second job to compensate for the lack of money they make in the WNBA and furthermore it shows that the women sports aren’t even valued enough to make them a career. On the other hand, men basketball is valued more because a benchwarmer makes more money than the most talented female basketball players. In order to change the turnout of fans and in turn the incomes of WNBA players, the WNBA must become more popular. The league can do so by motivating more females to be basketball players or appeal to a larger audience. The reason for the pay disparity is the ticket prices. WNBA claims they want to make prices affordable, but in reality they cannot charge higher prices because people will not pay the high prices. This struggle is not unique to basketball, many women’s sports, softball for example face the similar problems. Female sports are continuously at a disadvantage in comparison to male …show more content…
Tamar Haspel highlights the difference between female and male capability in her article “Throw Like a Girl? You Can Do Better.” The difference between a man and woman’s ability to throw comes from an evolutionary difference: “’Women did the gathering, and often brought a baby with them…that [one-piece] rotation came from women having to throw while holding a baby’”(Haspel). Essentially, men have more physical ability, which aids them in sports. People like watching the best of the best, so the physical capabilities are another reason why female sports have smaller audiences. My feelings on the issue are mixed, I do acknowledge that men have more physical ability, but I do not believe that female sports should not be supported because men compete at a different level. I like to watch and cheer for the best players, but connections with athletes make me a fan, therefore, I support athletes of all abilities. Many do not feel the same as I do, in particularly the desired audience to make a sport popular- “18-34-year-old male sports addict”(Dubois). Not only do we need to persuade girls to play sports, but change the perception of boys in regard to females playing sports. If female sports could attract more male fans then the popularity of the sport would

Throughout the past 100 years, gender roles of men and women have started to change greatly in our society, and especially in the world of sports. Recently, female athletes have made great strides in gaining equal representation, and media coverage, in comparison to the past, where there was little coverage of female athletics. In addition, women have begun to participate in many sports that have previously been male dominated. Some of these sports such as MMA, and hockey have been perceived as “manly” sports, and many feel that women should not participate in them due to their physically demanding nature. However, even though many female athletes have been discouraged from participating in male dominated sports, women have continued to break…

ARGUMENT 1: The male/female coverage of sports is not evenly distributed in the media. • Professional sports are a part of the entertainment industry, and thus, the spectators and supporters of the athletes mainly determine the quantity of pay. Men’s sports attract more spectators and attention, and are therefore able to sell more tickets to live events, thus generating more money. • More money is invested into commercials pertaining to male athletes. For instance, most TV commercials use the most popular male athletes.…

Third, many women may be much smaller and weaker than men, and not be able to lift as much weight or run as fast as men (Wood). Many women are very fast and strong, and play the sports better than some males that are playing these sports that the women play. Even if these women are slower or not as strong, they can still play the sports they love and excellent. Many women are always overlooked for being weak and slow when they really are not and they can still compete at these levels. With women being strong and fast they should not be over looked because they are better than many other players, but their hearts and dedication.…

In sport today I believe women are treated in an unfair way to their male counterparts. Sport is controlled by the media in this century and women are looked at as sexual objects rather than for their talent like men are. The women are also then expected to wear skimpy clothing not because it’s better for the sport but because of marketing. Professional female athletes are seen as inferior to their male counterparts and therefore don’t get as much media coverage. Women athletes play the exact same games, train equally as hard, yet are still getting paid a large amount less than men.…

Pay Inequalities in Athletics Women have always been seen as less of a person than men are in many aspects of life, with sports being one of them. Dating back to 1963, the Equal Pay Act was passed in regards to John F. Kennedy, yet, 54 years later, the working women still falls short to men, making 79 cents to the men’s dollar. Not only in the workplace, but also in collegiate and professional sports, we see major gender pay inequalities. Women athletes should be paid similar salaries to their male counterparts. Salaries for professional athletes should be based on their performance and a reflection of the hard work they put into training. Female athletes put in the same amount of time and effort as men, if not more. For example, Alex Morgan trains twice a day for three to four hours. Her annual salary is $450,000.…

This can be equated to women being treated unequally because the sport has been very male orientated for so long. Messner’s conclusion of men being conditioned to enjoy sports from a young age still seems to be true after all this time. Sports are so conditioned into our society, mainly to straight, white, cis-gendered males, that it is next to impossible to get rid of now. Although there are cases of women breaking down those gender norms, it is only a hope that women will continue to break them…

A study by the US National Library of Medicine showed that women were only 52 percent and 66 percent as strong as men in the upper and lower body regions, respectively. The studies included the size and activation of voluntary strength of the elbows and knees which showed that men had almost twice as much muscle in their upper bodies. Of course, muscles almost always correlates to strength but muscles not used diminish and die. This last statement does not mean to say that women cannot be as strong as men but usually men carry the advantage of containing larger fibers in their bodies. Skeptics will still argue that strength should not be a determining factor in sports but this does not hold true.…

If people were not brought up to watch the numerous amounts of male sports televised on television, then the inequality towards women would not be a subject to address. Men are often known to be providers of their families. But today, women have moved into this role and are competing with men.…

Is it because of views based on physical appearance where women always seem scrawny and feeble? Whatever the reason is, female athletes deserve the respect that male athletes receive.
