Female Song Sparrows

One of the studies done by (Nulty et al.2010) supports one of the points made in this paper; the song sparrows have various song types. Males have not one song but a song repertoire of 6–12 different songs (Nulty et al. 2010). There are other different types of songs used for sending particular messages, for instance When they give out the short phrases that have a sharp chip note, it indicates alarm or anxiety (Girard et al. 2012). Both the male and the female song sparrows make the sound when they are excited or if predators approach their nests (Girard et al. 2012). There is a slight difference between the sounds made by the male and that of the Females. Females make a harsh chatter at their mates while building nests or at another female intruding on the territory. Young song sparrows or subordinate birds make a softer, tsip note. When they attack others, they use a harsh, high-pitched 4-6 phrased song and sometimes they use 2-6 harsh, high-pitched songs (Nulty et al. 2010). …show more content…
In conclusion, this study shows that Song sparrows use their songs to communicate and chase away predators or others that are intruding on their territory. This in fact is one of the first steps they use, if it is a bigger problem then they use their beaks to hit or attack, they use their wings and tail to help them balance and add strength while attacking. They also use their legs to hold on to the body of the animal they are attacking. Therefore, they also use other features of their body to maintain a safe and sound territory besides their voice.
