William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy filled with characters of all kinds. Some are full of anger while others are full of wisdom. Some are caring while others are hardhearted. All around, without the different character traits webbed into the story of star-crossed lovers, there wouldn’t be a story. The three main female roles in this somber tale are Nurse, Juliet, and Lady Capulet. Juliet and Lady Capulet are of the upper-class whereas the Nurse is not. Through the tragic play a story unfolds and through this story Shakespeare makes it undoubtedly clear that Nurse and Lady Capulet are similar, yet different in many ways.

Although the characters reasons are slightly different, they both urge Juliet to marry the man picked by none other than Lord Capulet. In Act 1, Scene 3 Lady Capulet brings the topic of marriage up to her daughter by saying, “Well, think about marriage now; younger than you, here in Verona, ladies of esteem, are made already mothers. By my count, I was your mother much upon these years that you are now a maid. Thus then in brief: the valiant Paris seeks you for his love” (Lines 73-78). Therefore, Lady Capulet thinks it is right for Juliet to marry Paris because she is of age, for it was at this time that she herself became a mother. On the contrary, Nurse thinks Juliet should marry Paris because she fears Romeo and Juliet’s relationship will end just as quickly as it began. In lines 79 and 80 Nurse says, “A man, young lady! Lady, such a man as all the world-why, he’s a man of wax.” Another reason Nurse urges Juliet to marry Paris is because she doesn’t see any harm in Juliet marrying someone of such good looks. Later on, Nurse even describes him as “a flower” (line

Through the art of building character personalities, Shakespeare emphasizes the meaning of true love between the two main characters. The gender reversal between Romeo and Juliet are portrayed in the particular scenes and the context of Veronese society where they live. The portrayals of Romeo’ femininity and Juliet’s masculinity will be analyzed in this essay and I would criticize the common views of sociology toward the gender roles in this famous work of Shakespeare and come up with my differently psychological perspectives. Shakespeare portrays Juliet in a way that challenges the standards for the temporary society. In the play, Juliet was only thirteen - the age of innocence and dreams.…

2.3 Gender roles/equlity in Verona The whole story of Rmoeo and Juliet is based on the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues thus it is not suprising that Verona is dominated by masculine tension. As well as masculine tension is also sexual domination and violence a part of the life in Verona. The very first scene of the play indicates that “the rivalry between the Capulets and the Montagues is also, for the men (Sampson and Gregory, both of the Capulet household), the impetus for an inward rivalry, an inward pressure to masculine self-assertion that cannot be appeased or concluded.”…

During playwright William Shakespeare’s time, the Elizabethan Age, there were strict gender roles for both men and female. In his some of his memorable writings such as Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet, traits considered feminine or masculine were often crossed over despite the gender of the character. Shakespeare is known as a modern writer in the sense that many of his ideas were unlike others from his time, but relate very much to ideas today. The theme of gender, their roles in society and their stereotypes are prominent in his works but are often bent and altered. For example, in Macbeth, Lady Macbeth “wears the pants” in their relationship as she plans many of their endeavors, a role not done by women at this time.…

No one cares all that much about how Romeo found her bedroom window (Cut lines 79-84). I think the discussion between Romeo and Juliet on how he managed to find exactly the right place to find her was cut on the basis of repetition. Earlier in the scene its already established that he is risking a lot to be where he shouldn't be, and earlier still in the film we see Romeo ditch his friends in order to find the Capulet girl he kissed at the party. The audience knows he is guided by young love. It seems like the natural thing to ask someone who shows up outside your bedroom window, but for the sake of movie audiences, it ends up being a little redundant and both characters already eloquently articulate the force of love driving their actions.…

William Shakespeare, despite cultural norms and stereotypes of his time, wrote highly intelligent, clever, and self-aware female characters: sometimes more so than their male counterparts. In those cases, the women serve as teachers for these men in various situations and capacities. Whether they are successful in their education is debatable on a case-by-case basis, but the intent is a common thread in the bard 's works. Juliet, of Romeo and Juliet (Rom.), is the most subtle of these women. She has reason to be worried about Romeo’s love or, more specifically, the capricious nature of that love.…
