Female offenders go through many things in their lives that affect them all through life. The problems they face may be a reason or one of the reasons why they commit a crime in the first place. Women offenders kill family members or loved one more often than killing a random stranger. Female and male offenders are often compared to one another. Female offenders are not dangerous criminals as opposed to men, but female offenders are becoming incarcerated then male offenders are. Female offenders have many challenges while being in prison or even before then. Women offenders could have gone through some type of abuse, neglect from parents, or failure in their lives. Twenty-four percent of female offender’s victims were under three years old . Comparing female to male offenders, it is shown that eight percent of men kill their own family members, unlike female offenders who kill thirty- two percent of their family members. In January 2003, Susan Wright, also known as, the Blue Eyed Butcher killed her husband, Jeff Wright, in Houston, Texas. The couple met in 1997 and married a year later. Susan Wright claims that her husband abused her in the early years of their marriage, but never filed a report about it (fowler, 2010). The couple had two sons who Jeff Wright also started to abuse. On the night of the murder, Jeff Wright abused one of the couple’s sons. This might have drove Susan Wright to kill her husband. Later that night, Susan Wright tied her husband to their bed and stabbed him 193 times (fowler , 2010). Susan Wright then drags her husband and buries him in the backyard. She did not tell anyone about the murder for an entire week (fowler , 2010). Susan Wright finally confessed to her mother and the police to the murder of her husband, and Susan Wright was charged with the murder of her husband. She was found guilty and was sentenced to 25 years in prison, but was later reduced to 20 years on an appeal. Andrea Yates is another woman from Houston, Texas who murdered a family member. Female offenders are more likely to have panic disorders or other types of disorders in prison. Since many women in the prison system have children before or during prison, women may get postpartum depression (“Gender and Crime-differences,”2015). Women also have a history of abuse unlike men in the prison system. Female offenders have lower arrest rates in mainly every category than male offenders. Women offenders commit more minor crimes such as fraud, forgery, or embezzlement as compared to men offenders (“ Gender and Crime-differences,” 2015). Female offenders are less involved in any type of injury crime compared to men. Female offenders are less likely to come back to prison once they are out unlike male offenders. Unlike male offenders, female offenders usually work alone when they commit a crime.
