If I were to choose oil pastels, I would use layers of chalk pastels and use terps to smudge the bottom layers of the painting, and then add the detailing with the oil pastels without the terps on top of the layer. I wanted to show the detail on top of the basis layer because I feel that it depicts my subject of my theme best. For each of my pieces I would take an original photo and then draw that on paper. Before using the watercolour or oil pastels I would use pencil as and outline of what I want to do with the work. For the oil pastels I was inspired by Connie Chadwell who does many portraits of women in oil pastel, and the detailing in her work is an aspect I would love to show in my work. For watercolour, the comic book artist, Alex Maleev, who is famous for doing many portraits of superheroes, inspired me by the way his detailing on his watercolours were shown by his pencil detailing, and how the pencil and watercolour contrasted together so well. With my work, I would use less colouring in the watercolour and replace the pencil with the chalk pastel, so it would add more colours in contrast to less colour in the

During the “Target Scavenger Hunt” assignment, my perspective of gender has been expanded on what society thinks about gender. In general, Target separate the products into different categories, so the products could easily be found. In other words, the way they organize the stores is to appeal and advertise consumers to buying the items. For example, like Daniel had said in class, women’s clothes would appear first before any other clothing because women/mothers looks for clothes than men would. The men’s clothes is usually way in the back than it would be for women’s clothing.…

Gender effect in the Sierra Leone War Through Ishmael Beah and Mariatu Kamara’s autobiographies, the world learned about the devastating war in Sierra Leone through the eyes of a boy and a girl. In A Long Way Gone by Beah Beah he says, “One of the main aims of the rebels was to force the civilians to stay with them, especially women and children” (Beah 37). The rebels used the civilians as either bait for the army or as servants. They took girls to cook or exploit and recruited boys as soldiers.…

Ever since I was a little girl, I have been taught about what a girl should and shouldn’t do, what a girl should or shouldn’t wear, and even what a girl should or shouldn’t be. And as I got older my identity has slowly conformed to these gender ideas. But, what if when I was younger I hadn’t been taught about gender and what if gender ideals wouldn’t have been pushed onto us by the media? Would I be the same person that I am today, or would I be someone completely different? I would hope that I would be the same person now, but I do not believe that that would be the case.…

Judith Kegan Gardiner writes in On Female Identity and Writing by Women that “[f]emale identity is a process and writing by women engages us in this process as the female seeks to define itself in the experience of creating art” (361). Elaine Showalter takes the case further in her discussion of gender differences in determining “whether sex differences in language use can be theorized in terms of biology, socialization, and culture; whether women can create new languages of their own; [and] whether speaking, reading, and writing are gender marked” (252). She concludes that insufficient evidence exists in the dialogue between the genders, that language is not codified by sex and therefore cannot be regarded excepting “styles, strategies,…
