Female Heroism In Beowulf

Great Essays
Since biblical times, the concept of heroism has consistently been male-dominated; however, just recently, female heroism has begun its progression into stories and real-life. The characteristics of a hero within stories have been centered around courage, honesty, perseverance, attractiveness, and above all, strength. Due to strength being a common attribute of a hero, it is understandable that a man would be chosen as the hero for fairytales or action stories. Masculinity exudes strength and power while femininity conveys weakness. For example, in the comic, Thor, Thor Odinson is evidently muscular, indicating his strength. When Thor, Goddess of Thunder, appeared later in the comic, her strength is misconstrued due to her …show more content…
Today, it is preferable that a hero remains humble regarding their good deeds. Similarly, Beowulf was well-renowned by Hrothgar, amongst others, for his heroic contribution to protect the people of Denmark. Compared to today, someone could be regarded as a hero one day and then their reputation could be destroyed by the media the following day. However, the aspect of moving from male-dominated heroes to interchanging a hero’s gender has yet to occur which could hint at the presence of limited …show more content…
The creation of female heroes, such as Thor, Goddess of Thunder, and Batwoman, have garnered both positive and negative reactions in and out of the story. Upon their introductions, feminists were content as it appeared that women were one step closer to equality with men. No longer would women only be the protagonists in romantic comedies while men were the protagonists in action stories. However, those who were satisfied with tradition became frustrated when a hero’s gender became interchangeable, especially when the character of Thor shifted from a man to a woman. Likewise, the reactions within the text reflected those of the traditionalists. For instance, the frost giants continued the tradition by calling Thor, Goddess of Thunder, names that include “scrawny little girl, little firefly, and tiny wench.” It should be noted that in each name, the frost giants made sure to include a descriptor that indicated her small stature, a descriptor that they do not use when describing Thor. Also, before fighting her, the frost giants stated that it was mockery and overall humiliating to even bother attacking a woman. In Batwoman: Elegy, Batwoman was originally stabbed in the heart by one of Alice’s servants. Such a wound should be fatal no matter the gender, especially for a woman since they are generally known to be weaker than men. However, it was soon realized that the injury did not kill

Today, although an emphasis is still placed on strength, most people seem to believe that it is not just about strength, but also about the person’s want and effort to better other people’s lives. Superhero Comic Books Berlatsky’s article, “The Female Thor and the Female Comic-Book Reader” (2014), argues that girls are interested in reading superhero comics as much as boys; there has been a lot of speculation whether comic books were created to entertain only the masculine audience. In order to stop the sexism that has been going around in the superhero comic book industry, Berlatsky uses the logos Aristotelian appeal to inform the comic book audience that girls have been a fan of comics since decades ago. He also managed in using the hyperbole and aphorism rhetorical strategies to show that boys see girls differently and don’t belong in this industry. As a matter of fact, Berlatsky uses aphorism in one of the first paragraphs.…

In Beowulf, I found myself idolizing over the strong and fearless hero. He was what I would call “the perfect hero”, because not only did he get the job done, but he did it so with honor and modesty. In some cases it reminded me of the movie Hercules, where Hercules tried to show off as much as possible and show that he was better than everyone else to gain fame. While Beowulf used his famous strength to help those in need not to just gain fame, but because he knew he was undoubtedly the only one who could help.…

Of the many heroes in the Anglo-Saxon and medieval literature, Beowulf is a prime example of a hero. In the Beowulf poem written by the Beowulf poet, and in Robert Zemeckis’ film, Beowulf. Beowulf selflessly sacrifices his own life in the hopes of saving the lives of the Danes, who belonged to a whole different clan than his own. Beowulf is willing to give his own life for the betterment of another society, and with this he chivalrously saves many people. In this day and time, we the people of America have lost what it means to be a true hero. Immediately one can tell that Beowulf is a very male-centric and domineering text. The entirety of the whole epic only follows the the male lead, and the only pivotal, plot important characters are also male. In contrast, the only female character takes action in anything is the female villain, Grendel’s mother. Beowulf portrays only the male characters as the heroes, the people who make change within the world, while powerful females are presented as demonic hags that destroy everything in their paths. The fact Beowulf only focuses only on the male characters for any substantial character and plot progression censors females by erasing any hope of positive representation for the gender.…

“Wonder Woman” by Gloria Steinem is an essay about comic books having power in everyday life. Comics book tend to only be about super-heroes that save the day—but those super-heroes are men. Wonder Woman is the first female super-hero to be published continually since comic books began. Steinem mentions that Wonder Woman is a gateway for young girls to believe that they do not need to rely on men to save them—but they themselves can save the day. “Comic books have power because they are not part of the ‘serious’ grown-up world.”…
