Female Correctional Officer Case Study

Improved Essays
The issues that are involved in this case is that you have a female correctional officer that has been having a relationship with a 16 year old male. The relationship started though before the 16 year old male was incarcerated in the facility. Another issue to me that sticks out is that the 16 year old male is also under age, dating the officer. Another issue that arises is that the assistant detention officer knows about the relationship but he has been putting it off. The assistant detention officer is also taking this matter as a joke. The liability I have is that I have one of my female officer dating an underage boy and my assistant knows about the relationship, my agency could get sued and shutdown if the boy parents find out. I also

My career at the Colorado Department of Corrections has afforded me the opportunity to obtain first-rate experience in the field of criminal justice and the correctional industry. My profession began five years ago at the Colorado State Penitentiary working with maximum security offenders, as well as, behavioral at risk offenders and offenders with special needs that are categorized under the Americans with Disabilities Act. While CSP, I was assigned to both housing and security. It was in these units that I developed the skill to address offender issues and concerns. This is in addition to learning how to use communication skills and to utilize policies to assist in de-escalating situations that had the potential to go awry.…

When faced with the difficult reality of mass incarceration, and the high rates of women of color incarcerated in our federal prison system, we are often left wondering what we as mere college students can do. While our position against this unjust reality seems very small, one of the things we can do is provide educational resources to women of color in prison by donating our old books – whether these be our old college textbooks or any. There is very strong evidence out there that suggests that prisoners that are allowed access to education resources while in prison are more likely to thrive once released, and their chance of being re-incarcerated is lowered. In an interview with NPR following the Obama administration’s step toward expanding access of the Pell grant to adult prisoners, Lois Davis of the RAND corporation (a research organization that develops solutions to public policy challenges) said that education is the centerpiece of an effective re-entry into society, and a better way to spend our tax dollars: “Education is a relatively low-cost program you can provide to inmates. But, when you look simply at direct…

The population of women in American prisons is staggeringly high, more than any other country in the world. There could be many different aspects that lead women to have such a large prison population in the united states, more so than simply that America has a large population of women in general. One possible explanation could be that in America women are seen more as equals to men then in some other countries. With women being seen as just as capable as men judges may be less lenient on women then judges of other countries, giving them the same sentences as men. Another possibility could be that perhaps America doesn’t see women as equals to men, and expect women to fir certain roles within society.…

Parole / Corrections Officers The American Correctional Association stated that Parole Officers or Corrections officers have one of the highest rates of nonfatal, work-related injuries compared to all of U.S. workers. Almost forty percent of injuries are a result of physical assaults, confrontations with inmates and other acts of violence. Working with recently arrested individuals, as well as people awaiting trial or already serving prison sentences, is just one part of the job for corrections officers. Their main goal to keep offenders from repeating past crimes or violating parole and ending up returning to prison.…

Background: Women who are incarcerated while pregnant, receive no birthing education while in most prisons in the United States. In many states, incarcerated women in labor are transported to the nearest birthing center and are shackled to the labor bed with one armed guard inside the room and another outside the door. They often labor alone because they are not allowed to have a support person. The nurse on duty, is the only form of support they depend upon. Unfortunately, evidence indicates that many of the nurses have a punitive attitude toward the incarcerated patient, resulting in inadequate care.…

Historically, female offenders were imprisoned in a different building within a male prison. Women had to deal with sexual abuse, physical abuse, lack of services, and inadequate privacy. Prison guards were usually male because the characteristics of a prison guard were to mean and strong something society thought women lacked. Male guards had little understanding of female offenders and therefore led to brutal punishment. In 1873, the first all-female prison in the Unites States opened up and was identified as the Indiana Women’s Prison.…

Women of color’s health, as they enter the prison, is commonly impaired, and this impairment only increases as their time within the prison does because of its overcrowded conditions. These health issues become more severe in these environments as they are often rat infested, are scarce on water, are short on medical attendants, which ultimately, make emergency evacuations nearly impossible (Women Behind Bars). According to Stevenson’s firsthand account, “women had no privacy…there were dark corners and hallways-terrifying spaces at Tukwiler where women could be beaten or sexually assaulted” (238). Many of the women come into the prisons with communicable diseases like STDS, along with other health issues that only grow more severe, as “sick…

However, there are many more factors that contribute to an accidental or intentional use of excessive and sometimes deadly force. One of them is lack of proper training and adequate control in police departments (Lee & Vaughn, 2010, p.193). For instance, some police departments failed to provide their officers with training where they would acquire communication skills regarding mentally ill or emotionally unstable individuals (p.201). Lastly, Bernasconi (2014, p.146) suggested that the media also play a large role in the exaggeration of facts and overrepresentation of certain individuals that can induce police officers’ emotions of fear and leads them to commit thoughtless split-second decisions. All things considered, there are many social,…
