Throughout history, women have had to struggle through many hardships in order to obtain rights toward their health and reproductive rights. In the United States, the women’s movement has fought and continues to fight against a misogynist culture. Although there is still great room for improvement, women in the United States have greater access to facilities, medications, and doctors in order better their health. Unfortunately women in other countries and cultures, in particular Africa and the Middle East, have little to no reproductive health rights. In countries, such as Africa and the Middle East, a woman from the community who has no knowledge of health practices will perform female circumcisions outside of a hospital or health facility. There are four main types of female circumcision according to the World Health Organization, which detail the different ways the genitalia is cut and removed. During the procedure, the clitoris, labia minora, and/or labia majora will either be partially or completely removed. In most cases, the labia minora and/or labia majora will be stitched together in order to narrow the vaginal opening, which is referred to as infibulation. Due to this frequently occurring in unsanitary conditions by woman who have little to no knowledge of proper health practices, these girls are at extreme risks. In the movie, “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women”, while in Somaliland Diane Lane discovers a woman who uses a sharp piece of a plant when she performs female circumcisions in order to stitch together the labia. The tools that these women in underdeveloped countries are using create a high risk of infection for these young girls, which can easily end in death.
