Female Characters In A Raisin In The Sun By Lorraine Hansberry

In the novel, “A Raisin In the Sun” written by Lorraine Hansberry, there are three main female characters. Even though they are all put into similar situations, their personalities result in different responses to the problem. The main protagonist in the novel is Walter Younger. He lives in his mother’s apartment with his mother, his sister, his wife, and his son. The apartment that hey live in is very small and has only one bathroom to share with all the families living in the building. Their apartment is located in the rough area of South Side Chicago. In the play, Walter’s drive for money results in him losing part of an insurance check that his mother received for the death of his father. This action stimulated a response from each of the three women in the play. Their responses revealed the similarities and differences in their personalities.
Walter’s sister, Beneatha, has a lot in common with his wife Ruth. They are black women and love Walter. Even though they have these things in common, they still have polar opposite personalities. Beneatha is a “soon to be” medical student with a passion for learning and helping the sick. She has two boyfriends whose names are George and Joseph. George is a well-to-do black man who identifies himself as a white man. He is similar to Samuel L. Jackson’s character from the hit movie “Django Unchained”. …show more content…
Lorraine Hansberry created a masterpiece by tackling many of the unspoken topics in America. She created characters with interesting dialogue and clear goals/dreams. The characters envelope the American dream, “Rags to Riches”. They fought for a better life, and did what they could to care for one another. Lorraine also leaves room for imagination by leaving the ending of the book wide open, unlike fairy tale endings. She centered the drama around three memorable characters and developed the plot around their trials and
