When Will is having a happy memory of his best friend Nina, she is in the setting of warm colors like reds, yellows, and whites. By the beach, the sun is shining bright, giving off a warm feel, and symbolizing happiness. (1:55-2:06) Also in a dance studio, Nina is again seen in a bright setting giving off a blissful aura. When Will talks about a memory of Nina calling at night, she is crying. “She was down feeling un-admired.” (2:22-2:26) In the background, Nina was surrounded by her purple room color. Cool colors, like blues, violets, grays symbolize colors when people are sad or depressed. When Will grows older, he is seen writing in his kitchen. He is sitting alone his body silhouetted around the dark blue light. He describes himself as old and bitter. (4:13-4:23) Color again symbolizing the mood surrounding a character, using blues, violets, and grays. When Will finds out about Nina’s death he is seen sitting writing in his kitchen. There is a candle in the scene with a dancing flame. When the news reaches him, the flame blows out. (4:38-4:44). When people describe love, they sometimes describe it like fire. When two people love each other fast then fall out of love fast, it is compared to two matches when they combine. The flame gets bigger when together, but it will only die out faster.
