Feedback In Radiology

Superior Essays
During evaluation of performance in radiology the most often method employed is that of providing feedback, including “360 degree feedback” based on previous actions. The focus of feedback most often is leaning towards what’s is not going well. Consiquently, Feedback is often dreaded by the subject who may see it as inflexibility and with a critical connotation of “one has not done well enough”! Feedback if unilateral, it does not allow for reciprocal participation by the recipient with the end result of a defensive stance.
Over time, negative feedback contributes to rising friction and lack of camaraderie in the work place, as well as internalized lack of self-worth. Given the performance demands of radiology this can have a grave impact

A future, “pat on the back” so to speak, provides insight into positive qualities, ones you possess and those you can improve upon further.
Feedforward is a process in which the participant asks their colleague, leader or junior trainee actively for a couple of specific ways in which they can improve in order to have a greater impact/added value to the organization or department. Unlike feedback in which the the person being evaluated feels cornered and defiant, feedforward puts the participant in the controlling position of soliciting this advice from the recipient. Just as defensive emotions are triggered while receiving feedback the non-defensive and open minided feelings can dominate when receiving feedforward.
Marshall Goldsmith’s golden rules of Feedforward:
1. Identifying a behavior which if changed can cause a positive change in the future. Example: I want to be more patient andf helpful with clinician telephone calls even when I am stressed or, I need to slow down while looking at cases and remember the sick patient behing these images and

Ask this person for two suggestions that you could use in the future that would help you achieve the behavioral goal you’ve described. (If you know the person, Goldsmith notes that “the only ground rule is that there can be no mention of the past.”) The person then offers their two ideas.
4. Listen carefully to the suggestions and take notes if you wish. The final rule is that you must not comment in any way other than to say “Thank you.” Repeat the process with other people until you have all the suggestions you want or need or until the ideas begin to repeat.
Eventually some feedback for the feedforward may be solicited from the recipient but it will be at their pace and at request.
An example of feedforward in Radiology would be a faculty member asking for feedforward from a colleague for two areas of personal improvement.
Hi Jim. Do you have two suggestions for me to improve as an academic radiologist?
Tom answers: Here’s how you can improve your teaching score. One way is to come in and first thing in the morning, show 3 unknown cases to the residents, a 10-15 minute exercise, this will really stick in the residents minds and also make you a better

II INTRODUCTION The purpose of this lab was to demonstrate and observe the effect a large focal spot and a small focal spot will have on the resolution of the image. Chapter 3 of Practical Radiographic Imaging states that resolution is “the ability to distinguish two adjacent details as being separate and distinct from each other” (Carrol, 2007, p. 48). This definition of resolution helps to explain what will be looking for to retrieve the data for this lab. As stated in Chapter 16 of Practical Radiographic Imaging, the focal spot is defined as “the area on the x-ray tube anode which x-rays are emitted from, as seen from the viewpoint of the film” and this area can be determined by “the width of the beam of electrons striking the anode and by the bevel or angle of the surface of the anode where the electrons impact” (Carrol, 2007, p. 239).…

Be timely - Providing feedback as close to the event as possible is always the best approach, because the event is fresh in minds and can be related to more easily. However, make sure you're not providing feedback out of emotion and positioning yourself for an emotional argument. Go out for a walk or sleep on it first then give the feedback. Try not to wait longer than a day or so as the effectiveness of the feedback will go down the longer you wait. Get some coaching if necessary before giving feedback - Consider running your feedback by a trusted colleague, friend, or spouse before giving it to the recipient.…

There were some students who were prepared and competent in skills while others needed coaching and help from their peers.…

IPE Reflection and Evaluation Over the past few weeks we have been working on learning about interprofessional education, or IPE. Within these training modules, there were four main topics that were discussed, known as the IPEC competency domains; values/ethics, roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teamwork/team-based care. All four of these domains are parts, making up one larger goal. This goal is to train future medical professionals to work together more fluidly, resulting in statistically fewer errors and higher success rates of care in hospitals and other settings. On top of briefly discussing what the four IPEC competency domains are, I will also be revealing the two most important IPE skills that I have learned…
