Feed My Reflection

Improved Essays
Before my first year in high school I had tutored kids in grades below me. When I began high school I participated in an outside organization called Feed My Starving Children. I wanted to help the world and still do. I wanted to continue to help and began searching for new opportunities locally to do so. At my highschool they had an organized after school activity to take bins of recycle to the right dumpster to be reused. Every Tuesday and Thursday student volunteers including myself would meet up and discuss what hallways everyone was assigned to. I’d do anything I could every week to make sure I could attend between balancing school, family, and friends. Once discussion was over, we’d walk over to the loading dock to grab our recycling

I helped out the STEM academy by explaining people about the experiments, the purpose behind the experiments and cleaned or organized lab equipment. I was a part of the STEM academy for approximately three years in high school and I really enjoyed it because I knew I could make a difference in my community.…

Here at Eastern Illinois University, I am a member, but also the secretary for Best Buddies, where we create friendships with adults who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. Throughout the semesters, we have monthly parties where everyone gets together, however, I noticed that some of the buddies looked bored and uninterested in the activities and games provided for them. I then realized that these games were likely designed for previous buddies, and every year our organization grows and gains new individuals, which means our variety of disability changes as well. After that realization, I asked the members of Best Buddies what they would like to see at the upcoming parties in which they were all very eager to provide me their wants and…

The first chapter was called Letters to a Young Teacher. This reading talked about how many young teachers who work in urban school districts are estimated to leave that school district after three years. They say that the main reason is young teachers are unable to relate to the children who are minorities. However this can be fixed.…
