An operating system (OS) is computer software code that interfaces with user application software and the computer 's BIOS to allow applications to interact with the computer hardware. Without an operating system, the computer would be nothing more than a useless box. A computer needs an operating system to boot the computer, for user interface, file management, and system resources. These basic operations that an OS does comes in many different varieties. Dating back to 1950s, such of these operating systems were MS-DOS and PC DOS. MS - DOS was Microsoft 's originating operating system, which was simply a command line. In addition to this tech giant, there are several other notable operating systems in existence, one of them being Fedora 20. Fedora 20 is a popular Linux distribution being the latest operating system based on the Linux kernel. The popularity and the domain of its users have grown exponentially with in the last couple years to the point where its rightfully earned as spot as a notable rival to both Windows operating systems and even Mac OS which was also founded upon the Linux kernel. Fedora 20, as aforementioned, is the latest operating system distribution of the Fedora core line. Fedora 20 as an operating system houses some illustrious, user-friendly features. One of the more prominent features of Fedora 20 would have to be some of the developer options. Fedora 20 included this package known as WildFly8 that makes it possible to run Java EE 7 applications at a significantly higher speed that previous versions. Next in line, we have some features to improve the life of the every-day user that cater to entertainment and productivity. GNOME 3.10 is a software package comprised of several new applications, including both an internal music application and maps navigation app. Don’t worry, there are some features for advanced users a well. Within Fedora’s Network Manager, more advanced users have the ability to add, edit, delete, activate, and deactivate network connections via the command line tool provided. In addition to these powerful features, Fedora 20 has some features in the cloud and virtualization space as well. As of Fedora 20, users now have access to Logical Volume Manager Thin Provisioning which allows them to thin clients during the operating system installation and also Virtual Machine Snapshot UI with virt-manager, which is gives the users the power to take virtual machine snapshots.
