What is Special Education? There are still some whom really don’t understand or even know what a person who is considered to have special needs and special education are. By definition a person who is considered to have special needs refers to any disability requiring specially designed instruction. This term acknowledges one or more sensory, physical or mental disabilities, and also addresses exceptional gifts and talents. Then Special Education can be referred to specially designed instruction, at no cost to the parent, to meet the individual needs of a handicapped child (Federal Register, 1977). With the development of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1995, the vision of this definition expanded beyond separate programs and/or places to include “...a source of special education and related services for children with disabilities who need them for a meaningful and effective education” (IDEA Amendments of 1995: …show more content…
An IEP has to be redone every year, but it can be reevaluated several times throughout the year. In the school setting they have IEP meetings on a regular basis; they call in the parent, teacher/teachers, and whoever works with that particular student during school. They have these meetings to see if the goals have been met or if the goals need to be changed. They then come up with goals for the student, such as academic goals, behavior goals, and social/emotional goal as well. They also will include speech, occupational therapy, and physical therapy goals if that student receives that service. “Cases have established that the school district must consider more than just the narrowly defined educational needs of the child. Socialization and mental health are legitimate and, in some cases, required goals to include in the IEP.
