There are many different crimes to be dealt with, which means there must be different types of prisons to meet the needs of these inmates. Many people would argue that the sole function of prison is to punish,many progressive criminal justice professionals are committed to rehabilitating offenders and providing them a chance to turn their lives around. The federal prison itselfs is responsible for the care of estimately 210,000 federal offenders. These inmates are in a cell for 23 hours a day, with one hour to shower and exercise. These prison house the very dangerous and violent offenders. Close high-security prisons are a bit less restrictive than maximum. About sixteen percentage of inmates are held in these prisons. Some offenders are allowed to work at various tasks. There are also armed guards who oversee the prison complex twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Medium security are complexes with multiple structures and dormitory-like buildings. The toilet and shower areas are for group use. Thirty-five inmates are held in these faculties. Minimum security have fewer internal control and fewer guards. Open securities are similar to work release, pre-release, halfway houses and community-based corrections. There are special facilities within the federal system known as Supermax prisons. These have the highest level of security. Each inmate is considered exceedingly dangerous,has committed brutal and violent crimes, and poses a threat to others. Not only responsible for security but also for administering a number of services, recruiting and motivating well-trained professional prison employees, and managing the prison’s day-to-day operations. Security policies are rules and regulations that are strictly followed by prison personnel and inmates. The items a prisoner may own or have access to are strictly controlled.
