The Federal Mental Health Parity legislation is applied to plans that are sponsored by private and public sector for employers with more than 50 employees working for them. This prohibits plans from applying financial requirements or treatment limitations (Mental). In this legislation, there is a lifetime dollar limit and annual dollar limits for each employee that the employer has. This dollar limit is split between mental health benefits and medical/surgical benefits (Mental). Not only does it help these people, but the ones who could not afford good health insurance can now afford and receive not just insurance but insurance for mental health as well. This plan helps give people with mental illness the coverage they deserve. An impact of this is people who do have mental illnesses or show signs can go to the doctor and are diagnosed. In my opinion, I think mental health parity is a good thing, because without it the mentally ill would not get the help they need. I think that just because you have a mental illness does not mean that you do not deserve equal treatment for your medical condition. Another thing is just because you have a mental illness it does not mean that you should be refused insurance just because you may have more medical bills (Health). According to the definition of parity, mental health is treated the same way medical and surgical is. This is a positive because help can be expensive whether it is being screened for a disorder to being hospitalized because you need the help (Ohio). An individual should not be penalized for something that they do not always have control over. Instead of being penalized, they should be given the same opportunity to have medical treatments as others
