A general definition of a home network would be the interconnection between two or more computers to establish a local area network inside the home. With the advancement of the technology, the notion of computers has changed because many devices can do the same job that computers do. Therefore, let us define a home network as a local area network that allows digital devices present inside of a home to communicate together. We will enumerate a list of Home Network devices and we will write about the different features of each device. Home Network devices can be anything that can connect with another one to form a Local area Network (LAN): modem, router, hub, switch, Desktop computer, laptop, printer, Xbox, PlayStation, smart TV, tablet, IP …show more content…
In new technology environment, switch device has replaced hub because it is a smarter device. Technically, in networking system, a hub will distribute data sent to all users MAC address (a physical address with a unique identifier) whereas a Switch will filter the data and addresses it to the correct recipient. With a computer, a modem, a router and internet service we can create a home network that also allows access to the internet. This is very important because other home network devices may not be able to go online without internet service setup. The Desktop computer is the main device we usually use to setup and configure all devices of the home network; also to surf the net, to send emails, to read news, to play and share …show more content…
With IP camera connected to home network we can stream live video accessible from any home device inside the house or on a smartphone connected to the internet anywhere in the world. However, IP camera comes with some security issues; intruders can hack your network and have a virtual tour inside your house. The figure below show the architecture of home network using an IP camera surveillance: We have written about the electronic gadgets that are part of home network, now we will talk about the smart appliances such as light bulbs and thermostat. Sometimes we may not feel energized to work back to the kitchen to turn off the lights. Therefore, the lights can stay ON for an unnecessary amount of time. With the technology, we can remotely turn ON / OFF a smart light bulb. This feature helps save energy. Same thing for the thermostat controlling the temperature, with weather conditions changing, we can adjust our home temperature from time to

So you have an old Dell PowerEdge 2900 Server laying around with a few hard drives and your thinking I would really like to use this equipment as a NAS drive. It could happen, in our case it did. There were some stumbling blocks on the way though. Here is how we got through them… The goals we wanted to accomplish were creating a RAID5 array of 8 (7+1 Hot Spare) 1TB hard drives and then wanted to connect this FreeNas volume through and iSCSI channel to a file server that will present the NAS as a shared folder all of our servers could use. We quickly found that using the factory PERC (PowerEdge RAID Controller) to create a RAID 5 Array was not going to work.…

TCP/IP improved communications throughout the network and allowed all computers to easily communicate with one another. Another technology that helped expand the ARPANET to more users in a specific location was the development of the Ethernet.
