In the following story I will be drawing a parallel between the poem “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou, and the upcoming Homecoming football game between Lane and Curie. In it I will be demonstrating why I believe that both lane and Curie are caged birds. My piece is titled “Escaping one's Cage”. Escaping One’s Cage. Before the game even began you could see the growing anxiety on the Lane Tech football team, they were about to go out representing their entire school, in front of an immense crowd in their own stadium.…
“A Certain Lady” is a short poem written by Dorothy Parker detailing a woman’s thoughts on her relationship with a mysterious man. The poem is written as a monologue about the woman’s ability to appear happy around the man and his inability to gauge her true feelings. Despite her affection for him, he constantly tells her stories of his exploits with women. While the topic itself seems simple in nature, the relationship in question, as well as the poem itself, is quite complex. Each stanza adds layers of complexity to the poem.…
This use of sensory imagery using such vivid words intensifies the scene even further. In addition to that, Susan Hill uses the verbs ‘rattling…moaning…whistling’(p.151) to describe the powerful wind that was causing disturbances to Arthur. They describe the fear and danger that Arthur is in, while also impacting the reader in the same way. At the same time this also resembles the feeling of being trapped that Arthur might feel, as if the house is the only safe place for miles; then if he goes out he would be in danger but even the steady house doesn’t guarantee him safety either way he is frozen in…
It grew quicker and quicker, louder and louder every moment. The old man’s terror must have been extreme!” (Page 405) Here, the death of the old man is personified in such a way that the old man looked very close to…
Have you ever felt that people judge you based on your looks or have you gone through things you thought were harsh to you at the moment ? When in reality you do not exactly know what harsh is unless you were a Japanese during WWII. Take a look, more of a consideration the way the U.S. made the japanese ethnicity/ancestry feel. For a while we have been reading many articles about what happened in the internments and how japanese felt and many of them have themes that they share. The texts Farewell to Manzanar, “Why Children Did Not Knock At My Door Halloween This Year”, and “ Remembering The No-No Boys” reveal the following recurring themes on discrimination, separation of families , and prejudice.…
Growing up as a hispanic woman in America has always been more difficult than I thought it was going to be. There were many times where I felt excluded, judged or like I am not as good as other people. Throughout my life this has always affected my happiness because it was never as easy as I wanted it to be. With that being said, many people that are also a different race also struggle with this problem and this affects their wellbeing as well. I came to realize what a struggle being a person of color is to other people as well after carefully reading a short story by Junot Diaz called “Wildwood” and a poem by Claudia Rankine called “From Citizen Six” where both of the characters were treated unfairly, and ran into issues on a daily basis because…
Author’s create suspense by putting the characters in jeopardy , either they are overcoming an obstacle with another person or group or people, having a dispute with some “great god”, or even having internal struggle with themselves they are put in peril in some way. In the story “ The Tell Tale Heart”, by Edgar Allen Poe the author creates suspense by using repetition. The author repeats the same sentences or phrases in his writing for suspense. As Poe states, “But even yet I refrained and kept still.” and the states again “Yet for some minutes longer I refrained and stood still.”…
In many short stories there are themes, tones, and main ideas formed as suspense is evoked to the readers. In Roald Dahl’s short story “The Landlady,” a young man named Billy Weaver was in search of a inexpensive place to live. He stumbles upon a bed and breakfast that is fairly cheap, but the landlady he encountered was a little out of the ordinary. After a series of events demonstrating the landlady’s peculiarity, the readers have warranted suspicion of Billy Weaver’s death. In Edgar Allen Poe’s short story “The Tell-Tale Heart,” the narrator liked the old man, but hated the man’s eye, leading to his desire to kill the old man.…
Mood In my story 7-Eleven Burrito, I created a peaceful mood in the beginning and end of my short story using descriptive language. When Peter entered the 7-eleven shop, “Sunlight filtered through the wide shop windows, the warm cocoa odor of the coffee machine wafted through the air, and the low humming of the hot dog machine snored in the background. ”(1). The use “sunlight”, “warm”, and “snore” create an idyllic atmosphere as they convey a feeling similar to waking up early in the morning to the songs of birds and warm sunlight on your face. This is because the word sunlight has a positive connotation, it makes the reader feel light inside due to its importance in our lives.…

“What is an Act of Terror?” by Jo Ellen Green Kaiser gives a short description of acts of terror and acts of war. Kaiser tries to make us believe that an “act of terror” and an “act or war” are the same thing. She wants us to believe that if you believe different you can take awful actions. They both aim to cause death and destruction, and they both cause fear.…
Upon initial reading, “The Victims” by Sharon Olds seems to be a poem that paints the picture of a life of abuse; starting from the dawning of the exploitation and arching over into the life of the abused following the maltreatment. In the work, it is made to be believed that the clear victims of the poem are the speaker and their family—which is a rightful and obvious assumption—but there is another victim that is not as prevalent as that of the speaker and their family: the speaker’s father. After a second read, it is made evidently apparent that although the work does focus on the speaker and their family as the victims of the poem, the ideal that the father is also a victim is explored. Since the father is depicted as an abuser, it is seen…
“The Victims” “The Victims” by Sharon Olds is written about a child that holds a heavy hate towards their father. Through the use of diction, Sharon Olds creates a tone of resentment in “The Victims”. The tone is set through both the connotation and denotation behind the specific words that she uses. Olds creatively practices these tools when she changes the construction of the language about half way through the poem.…

Diseases and Sicknesses are two negatives people might encounter in their lives and the detrimental effects of these illnesses is the main reason of death. In Thom Gunn’s poem “The Man With Night Sweats” the person is suffering from this disease and he wrote this poem because of the deaths of his friends. Gunn tries to show people how detrimental this disease is as he struggles through life. In “Night Sweat”, written by Robert Lowell, by employing the use of hyperbole and similes, he tries to compare two important and distinct aspects of his personal life, his poetry writing and his disability, whereas in “The Man with Night Sweats” Thom Gunn utilizes visual imagery and the use of hyperbole to create a world where the author suffers from…
