Fear Of Going To College

Decent Essays
Ever since I was a child I have taken my academic studies seriously because I knew that one day I was going to have to grow up and in order to be successful in life you need to have an education. Now, I won’t sugarcoat this, but I’ve always been afraid of the thought of going to college because I would look at college tuitions on pamphlets and see at least three zeroes behind every number. Thoughts would race through my head thinking how will my parents ever make this amount of money and was college even worth going to? I’ve grown up as a low middle class child and college was never mentioned in my family, I guess you could say that they were ashamed of the fact that they couldn’t give us everything and to make it worst maybe even college.

Cassidy never picks a side regarding whether or not a higher education is necessary for the success of a person. However, he presents both sides and provides strong arguments for both cases. Cassidy expresses how the expensive costs of college can make or break a person’s decision regarding whether or not they want to attend. He states, “Students in the United States pay about four times more than their peers in countries elsewhere” (Cassidy, 2015, p.2). The United States is one of the only places in the world to have such high costs for college.…

In our current economic situation almost everyone has to worry about money, whether that is for: groceries, the mortgage, rent, or in our scenario, schooling. With the cost of getting a higher education being so high today will it pay out in the long run? You don’t want to waste four years going to a school that will set you back farther than you want. Possibly even get a degree that will not help you secure yourself a stable financial future. In an article titled, The Rising Cost of Not Going to College by the Pew research center, one of the statistics it shows talks about how most college graduates, who are working full time, earn about $17,500 more per year than other participants who only have a high school diploma.…

Determining whether pursing a college education is worth the money is a matter that will cross the minds of many at some point in their lives. Some believe that college is not only a waste of time but, also money. On the other hand, some would argue that education is an investment that will pay off later in life. In the article “Yes, A College Degree is Worth the Costs,” Rodney K. Smith states that his family views education as an investment and stewardship. He argues that “[m]any in the rising generation fail to see education as a stewardship worthy of investment on their part.”…

There comes in time in every adolescent's life where you are obliged to think about what is in store for your future. In the American grade school system you are advised rather by your parents or mentors to start thinking about college, years before high school graduation. In American culture we are taught at a young age to optimistically share our dreams of what we want to be when we grow up. It is a conventional perception that any child can be what they they want to be if they put their mind to it. I’ve decided to research the topic of how upcoming parents fear they might not have the fund to help put their children through college. This is an ongoing worry for most parents, especially those who didn’t receive a college education themselves. But the question that arises the most of what I’ve experienced is “what will the college tuition be when my child does look into going to college?” or “Will I even be able to send my son or daughter to college when it’s time”. As an uncle of four I also fear that my nieces and nephews won’t be able to get into a good college without the big fear of whether or not they will be able to afford it.…

After reading, “The Promise” from C. Wright Mills’ The Sociological Imagination, I believe that Mills’ message is that no one’s problems are unique and because you have them that does not make you special. This seems like a harsh interpretation of his words but let me explain. Mills implies that what you are going through may seem like you are the only one in that situation, but once you look around and pay attention, you will notice that other people are dealing with the same troubles. The overall theme of the passage was that to understand your own personal troubles you must look at it in greater context of public issues. That circumstances like a failing marriage, losing your job, or being without a home are not simply personal troubles…

Throughout my childhood, I was never encouraged by my family to go towards the college pathway and I would never question myself or them about it. I didn’t acknowledge the meaning of attending college or university or what they were. I wasn’t conscious of how life was after high school— I just knew that I had to get my high school diploma and then get a job at McDonald’s or Subway, because they’re common places to get hired at. I always had the feeling that I was going to end up like my siblings: high school dropouts with no education or being a pregnant Latina at a young age and settle down early with their possible spouses. Additionally, I had the feeling of ending up like my mother that raised all her children through welfare in California, and still is at this point.…

Many are beginning to fall under the impression that college may actually be a scam and there are other ways of making money without being justified by a degree certificate. I strongly believe that a college education is imperative simply because one’s knowledge is instilled in them forever, they cannot be deprived of it. Despite my beliefs on education however, I understand why some people are beginning to form this conclusion. Parents and teachers at times lead children to believe that they can become anyone they want in life with a degree but these children are not always informed of the factors that go into education, such as tuition and fees until their senior year of highschool. The cost of a college tuition is is a major factor, along with the many other college expenses.…

People will sometimes determine that the cost of college is too much and not worth it. Students who do look at college are left to discover on their own with their parents how they are going to afford college if they decide to go. It can seem like universities are holding a person’s freedom to learn hostage unless they pay the fee to attend. College today shouldn’t be considered an alternative to working, but a necessity to further one’s own personal knowledge and also have a better chance at getting a career in a field that’s enjoyable to the student. Being the first person in the history of my family to pursue a college degree, it took a lot of research and autodidacticism to learn the process of getting into college. The fact that my mother only made it to 5th grade and my father to 2nd grade, pursuing a bachelor’s degree was never something my parents envisioned me to accomplish. I was never raised with meeting educational expectations because they weren’t ever set in the first place. It wasn’t something I envisioned for myself either, not until one of my math teachers in Middle School encouraged me to go to college and pursue a degree in mathematics. She saw that passion I had for mathematics when I was just 13 years old and encouraged me to pursue a degree in mathematics.…
