Fear Of Dying In Romeo And Juliet

Decent Essays
Both Romeo and Juliet threaten suicide, the Montague and Capulet servants fight with no fear of death, and even Mercutio makes a joke while he is dying. Is death something to be taken lightly and with no fear? You shouldn’t take death so lightly and with no fear. If you take it lightly, then its like you don’t care about life itself. But if people don’t take death lightly, why might people have a fear of dying? People might be afraid of dying because they might be afraid of the thought of dying. The thought of not seeing your loved one again, and being in the pain of dying.

However, in order to help Juliet through her "grief" over Tybalt's death, Capulet decides to marry her off to Paris (III, iv). Of course this is a problem as she is secretly married to Romeo at this time. In III, v, Lady Capulet states, "I'll send one in Mantua, where that same banished runagate doth live, that he shall soon keep Tybalt company…" (ll94-96). This statement prophesizes Romeo's death later in the final scene of the play. Then, Lady Capulet wishes her daughter to be married to her grave (ll. 145), which is ironic, as Juliet will take a potion causing her to appear dead in IV, ii. That same evening, the lovers consummate their marriage, and in the morning, Juliet makes yet another prophesy, "O God, I have an ill-divining soul!…

For example, an elderly person who has had others pass before them seems to not fear death like their younger relatives may, this could be because they have lived ethically and believe they are worthy of an afterlife. On the other hand, it could be because they have realized that they have no way of knowing what is on “the other side” and that if they have a belief in the afterlife, then it would be a blessing for death to reunite them with their loved ones who have past prior to them. Why I do not fear death is as simple as Socrates states “If it is a complete lack of perception, like a dreamless sleep, then death would be a great advantage.” (40d) For a sufferer of the anxieties that plague the brain, a sleep free of the dreams that may contain such anxieties would be peaceful.…

Baz Lurhmann’s film Romeo + Juliet takes Shakespeare’s classic tragedy and drastically modernizes the tale. Although there have been numerous reenactments, on and off the stage, Lurhmann creates one of the most drastic versions seen. With this drastic take the fidelity of the film takes into account. Although the look of the film is not exactly what Shakespeare imagined the themes and characters are mostly true to the play. For instance, Act 3 Scene 1 (the death scene for Mercutio and Tybalt) has all the correct lines, but some actions are different.…

Death is something we all have to accept, no matter what religion we are and whether we like it or not. We were not put on this Earth to live forever and that is a fact. A fear of death should not halt how we live our life, though. If how we live reflects what happens after we die, we should strive to be humble, gracious, kind, and we should have no reason to fear…
