There are two types of doctors in this world, the ones on the television and the ones in local hospitals and clinics. The majority of the people in today’s world face the television doctor more than the real doctor because of the medical based shows that stream on the TV. In that sense many people base their opinions of doctors on what they see on television. The medical based television shows display doctors blaming their stress for their outrageous behaviors in the work setting like the sexual activities they partake in and their acting out in the work place. A show that displays doctors using their stress as an excuse so they can participate in sexual activities with other co-workers is, Grey’s Anatomy. This medical based series started in 2005 and continues to gain more viewers on ABC network. The show is based around love and not what happens in a hospital on a daily occurrence (Branea, Guguianu, 50). This show displays doctors blaming their stress for the activities they perform in the on call room. In reality they would not obtain enough time to fool around with others because they have to care for multiple patients. The one thing that stands out with this show is the amount of outrageous cases the doctor’s care for in a matter of 60 minutes within one episode. In this show they display a busy emergency room rushing people up to the OR to perform emergency procedures, but “action packed emergency rooms are often the setting for TV medical dramas” (Jones 4). Being a doctor could become one of the most stressful jobs because other people’s lives are in their hands. Even though the majority of what medical dramas display is false, they do portray correctly how doctors try their hardest to eliminate the patient’s symptoms. For example, Doctor House always tries to figure out what he can do to resolve the patient’s symptoms even if he does lack sympathy. Most doctors have to balance their work lives with their personal lives because many work outrageous hours unlike the shows display. These shows like to focus on the action packed emergency rooms and the high stress cases instead of showing daily job task like paperwork (Jones 5). Sometimes these shows do not display what happens “in a regular hospital setting because doctors deal with factors that may lead to a more stressful life such as: shift work and staffing patterns” (Madapalli, Muralidhar, and Tattari 15). Grey’s Anatomy displays the doctors only working on the patients; they never show the office part of being a doctor. They would rather show the glamorous side of being a doctor, and not the part that involves paperwork and calling insurance companies. Most doctors do not obtain a set schedule because every minute in a hospital they need multiple doctors to help care for patients.
