The main character Jack, and his wife Babette, shows a fear of death in most parts of the book. Jack was afraid from the beginning of death and when he got exposed from the toxic, he got even more afraid because he knew he was going to die.
Babette on the other hand didn't get exposed but instead she seeks pleasure in drugs that she buys from a guy named Willie. It is shown early in the book, when the smoke alarm goes off but no one cared. It was a little annoying to read this book the first hundred pages and that was because there where a lot of writing about the white noise. It was like I didn't really think about what I was reading. White noises in real life often gets ignored and I felt that way about the "noises" in this book too. I know I can hear the noises but I forget them. I had to go back a second time to some pages just to know what I’ve read. I also like that no one cared about the alarm that went off in their home early in the book. Alarms is a warning for fire which can burn down the house and kill you. It is a little strange that they didn't even check it out, because they could have died if the house was on
