these two stories and they connect to how fear is used to control people. Fear is seen today and
was seen in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Both Joyce Carol Oates and Flannery O’Connor emphasized
this throughout their stories.
In Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? Arnold Friend exists as a character

The fear that Connie gets from Arnold leads her to feel isolated and can’t do
anything to stop it. All of these violent things are happening and it sent fear into many people
and it is the same just like back when Oates wrote this short story. It’s the same just like in A
Good Man Is Hard to Find. Misfit is an antagonist that enjoys violence just like Arnold Friend
but he does it in a more violent way and it shows this in O’Connor’s story. So Misfit is talking to
the grandmother and distracting her while his gang is going off and killing the family. When one
of Misfit’s gang members came back with her son’s shirt that sends her into her state of fear. She
knew what they were doing so that is when she started trying to talk her way out of it. So you can
say he is trying to make her safe until she starts noticing what he is doing so that’s why she starts
talking to him more. He eventually gets tired of talking to her and shoots her three times in the
