(Orwell, 36) In the book 1984, the government, also known as The Partycontrols everything from the past, present, and future. They gain immense power and complete control of Oceania by using psychological manipulation. The end goal – to get a non-individual, obedient society, and gain absolute power. The tools used to accomplish psychological manipulation are terror, physical control, and political manipulation. These three tools directly affect the way one thinks, feels, behaves and acts, resulting in the final outcome of mind control.
Terror manipulation allows control and manipulation as it uses one’s fears. Fear is a natural human instinct, and is something that robs one of rationality. It is the best tool for psychological manipulation as it directly targets the weakest points of the mind. It allows The Partyto gain full control of its citizens effectively by using threats which get them to comply to rules and regulations without any doubt. The Partyuses the Thought Police as a tool for manipulation, and captures people who commit the crime of individual thought, also known as thoughtcrime. As it is shown in the book 1984, if caught by the thought police, there are severe consequences, “People simply disappeared, always during the night.
