Fear In The Martian Chronicles

Fear is basically just an active imagination that comes to a person when creating the worst possible scenario. Imagining gruesome scenarios is kind of like a comfort because then you know what to expect. People don’t normally find themselves being happy when they are getting kidnapped. Fear allows people to imagine an unnatural scenario, which can blind them to act irrationally and unreasonably. In the book, The Martian Chronicles, written by Ray Bradbury, a chapter was introduced to us in a new perspective. The chapter was called “The Martian” and in it tells, Tom is Lafarge’s son, but the twist is that he has been dead for a long time. Lafarge and his wife found “Tom” outside of their houses. All of the people are very immature, not realizing what is fact and what is fantasy. There are some people that are kind, however, they must realize that when someone is dead, they cannot be ever resurrected by anything else. However, it doesn’t really mean that everybody is immature with fear. In some cases, other people will take fear in a different way. Sam is a businessman, which has not been making business. For example, in the quote, “In an instant later, he yanked his own gun from his hip holster and fired into the mist, the robe, the blue mask”(135). Although he wanted people from Earth to come and eat his hot dogs, it wasn’t possible because at the end of the chapter, the Earth caught on fire. This happened after the Martians came to give Sam half of Mars, and it was after Sam shot two innocent Martians. Sam was very scared of being all alone, except for his wife, which then resulted in a mental disorder. He kept thinking that thousands or Earthlings will come and enjoy his food, but that was not his desired results. In the Martian Chronicles, it shows us the importance of what our fear can lead us to …show more content…
Another person from Ted-Talk gave us a more creative point of view. In this small video Karen Thompson Walker has basically summarized what is in everybody’s fears. She said that fear is basically what our mind is going through during tough situation. She starts from childhood, and moved all the way up to adulthood in the quote “As we grow up, we're often encouraged to think of fear as a weakness, just another childish thing to discard like baby teeth or roller skates”. Fear is a weakness that can be overcome by people who persevere hard enough. It is not like the hardest puzzle in the world, but it is not the easiest one either. Some children, or adults, in the world are not so lucky, so we have to take the opportunity whenever it arises. Fear is just an opportunity disguised as a challenge. As we take a closer look into our fears, we will find that what she said is true. As we grow up, we witness more and more frightful situations, so that is what caused us to think of such situations. As it is said here, “These were the fears that danced in the imaginations of these poor men, and as it turned out, the fear they chose to listen to would govern whether they lived or died”. Fear is like a psychological test. It tests whether or not you can make the right decision, even when your life is on the line. You don't need fear to "predict the future". In fact, predicting the
