Fear can make a man do anything weather it be suicide or to wage war on another nation. Fear is the most powerful weapon in every society and time and time again people have shown their true colors when faced with fear, for better or for worse. Possibly the most devastating, eye opening event in American history, 9/11 made international headlines which struck fear into the hearts of people. Tituba, after being accused of practicing witchcraft, passed the blame onto others in order to clear her name. When pleading to Rev. Paris she says, "But he say,'You work for me, Tituba, and I make you free...' And I say 'You lie Devil, you lie!'... He say, ' Look! I have white people who belong to me." And I look and there was Goody Good" (Miller 44). Out of fear of being hanged Tituba names another person who was supposedly practicing witchcraft as well. Tituba does this in hopes of convincing everyone that she is faithful to God. She believes if she "betrays" the Devil by exposing some of his followers then she will prove that she loves God and will not be hanged. Just like Tituba, Mary Warren accuses John Proctor saying, "He come at me by night and every day to sign, to sign, to... My name, he wants my name. 'I'll murder you' he says, 'if my wife hangs! We must go over throw the court,' he says!"(Miller 110). Prior to this event John Proctor had convinced her to speak up and tell everyone they were faking it. However she is accused of being a witch herself and then she points the finger at Proctor to take victimize herself so she will get pity from the court. The most shocking part about this is that Mary Warren agreed to help proctor and then she betrays him as soon as things go south. As seen by Tituba and Mary Warren, fear can push people to extremes and sometimes to alleviate that fear one may do something that would compromise their moral

Throughout the Crucible, it seems that no matter the background or belief of a character, they have to persevere through struggles that arise due to religious beliefs, the time period, and the corruption that seems to plague any human civilization. Within the trials, suffering can be inflicted on a character's mental state, emotional state, and physical state. It was Arthur Miller's environment filled with fear that invoked him to write a play that encompassed the pain felt by the innocent and the rewards that were gained by the unjust. The characters that went through trials that embodied this central idea were: Giles Corey, John Proctor, and Elizabeth Proctor.…

Mass hysteria has the potential to tear a community apart as demonstrated in The Crucible. What is hysteria? “It is defined as an overwhelming fear and excitement that overrides all logic, and is often enhanced and intensified by the presence of others who are acting out on that fear” (Campbell). That theme is common throughout the play written by Arthur Miller. From the beginning, where the witchery begins to John Proctor getting hung, the little town of Salem undergoes major changes.…
