The first symbol Steinback uses is a scorpion. In the beginning of the novella, Kino, Juana, and Coyotito are in their house when they see a scorpion on the crib of baby coyotito. In an attempt to save the baby, kino moves the crib , but the scorpion falls and stings the baby. Steinback uses the scorpion as a symbol of evil. Kino is mad that the scorpion stung coyotito, so ¨ the song of the enemy roared in his ears¨ (Steinback 3). Furthermore, this is much like something that would happen today, when something bad happens to a kid, the parents do not think of anything else but their kid, and are very worried. The second symbol steinback uses is the canoe. The canoe is introduced to the novela when kino goes pearl diving. The canoe brings great value to kino because ¨ it was at once property and source of food, for a man with a boat can guarantee a woman that she will eat something”( Steinback 8). Furthermore, today a man is supposed to provide for his wife, marriage is supposed to be a symbol of love and respect. The last symbol steinback uses in the novella is the pearl. The pearl is introduced into the novella when kino goes kino pearl diving because he needs money to pay the doctor. The pearl is a symbol of a better life and future. In the pearl, Kino finds the pearl of the world and all the town is happy for him but in reality they are jealous of all the fame and fortune the pearl brings him. ¨They knew that there is no aims giver in the world like a poor man who is suddenly lucky¨ (Steinback 11). The beggars help develop the theme that greed will not get you anywhere because they know that kino will not be greedy with his money and he will use the fortune on his family. The second character that helps develops the theme is the doctor. After the doctor finds out that kino finds the pearl of the world he claims ¨ he is a client of mine ¨ ( Steinback 11). The doctor has stopped being selfish and is ready to help kino and his family even though it 's for the pearl. The last character that helps to develop the theme is juana. At the end of the novella, Juana gets irritated with how much evil the pearl brings to their family,so she tries to convince kino to throw it away. She tells him,¨ Kino this pearl is evil, let us destroy it, before it destroys us¨ (Steinbeck 31). When Juana says this it shows how juana doesn 't care about all the fortune it will bring she only cares about her family being safe. Juana just wants to be happy again, once again proving the theme that greed will not get you anywhere. In conclusion, Steinbeck effectively develops the theme through the use of

One major use of symbolism is how the pearl, and its color, changed throughout the story, from when Kino found it to when Kino was on the way home, having killed four people, and his son being shot and killed as well. “He looked into its surface and it was gray and ulcerous… And the pearl was ugly; it was gray, like a malignant growth” (Steinbeck 86).
