In the book The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho a recurring theme is seen in the book. Fear is very constant. In the beginning of the book we see that Santiago , the main character, is afraid of traveling to Africa and following his Personal legend. I believe that he is afraid not because it is far away , I believe that he is afraid of the unknown. It is important that we see this because through out the book so far he has found ways to overcome his fear and is slowly accomplishing his personal journey. Another example of fear in the book is when the crystal merchant confesses to Santiago that he has not completed his Personal Legend of making a pilgrimage to the city of Mecca.
