In Lord of the Flies, Jack is able to use the fear of the beast to manipulate the boys to join his side. This is implied in chapter 9 when the boys are gathered at the feast when Jack says, “‘... my hunters will protect you from the beast. Who will join my tribe?’”(Golding, 150). This quote signifies with the fear of the beast present, he is able to obtain power through manipulating the boys’ fear of the beast. Throughout the book Jack mentions and reiterated the beast to the boys, eventually Jack realizes that he can use the fear of the beast that is common among the boys and he is able to manipulate the boys to fulfill his desire of having a commanding position. Additionally in chapter 10, after the death of Simon who was presumed to be the beast, Jack discusses that the beast hasn’t died and the fear of the beast is still present within the group. ‘We’d better keep on the right side of him, anyhow. You can’t tell what he might do. The tribe considered this; and then were shaken, as if by a flow of wind.’” (Golding, 161). Jack suggest that the beast still remains on the island and warns his tribe that they should take precautions when dealing with the beast. Jack wants to make sure that his high power still remains intact by retaining the tribe’s greatest fear, the beast. Jack deceives his tribe by constantly reminding them the fear that causes the tribe to panic and become anxious
