Golding continually expresses fear and worry for the human race and it's inhumanity towards each other in his novel The Lord of the Flies. This fear is expressed by his character, and main protagonist, Ralph and how at the end of the LOTF he weeps for the end of innocence and be darkness in Man’s heart. Throughout the novel we see how the ramshackle civilization of boys slowly crumbles to dust, this decay of civilisation is illustrated in the deterioration of the conch. In the beginning of the book, the conch is described as being a highly iridescent and pearly object, full of splendor.
