Graduation Speech: A Short Story

As I slowly walked to Mrs. Eley’s classroom, I was dreading the upcoming mission I was about to undertake. Ever since the first time I had to speak in front of a class, the uttering of the words ‘public speech’ ties my stomach in knots. Now here I was, a mere 29 days into my senior year, and, once again, being forced to engage in this heinous act of teacher induced torture. It all started about a week ago, …show more content…

I looked down, realizing that I had made a mistake and quickly spurted out the words “ much unlike anywhere else.” Feeling as though the whole class was laughing at me, I looked out over the crowd. Seeing a few friendly faces encouraged me to proceed. I took a long pause thinking to myself, these are people that I have been friends with for years, recalling just minutes before how they had all put their own goofy spin on their presentations. I could feel everyone in the room was supporting me. Feeling better about what was happening, I continued

From my position at the podium, in front of many critical eyes, I was sure that my heartbeat was audible to every set of ears in the classroom. My fingers trembled uncontrollably and while doing so, unknowingly crumpled the sheet of paper that was held between them. In that moment, I was hyperaware of everything that was happening around me. Every blink, every cough, even the constant ticking of the clock at the back of the room made me more uneasy than I already was. I waited patiently, as patiently as I ever had in my life, for the “Go” from my teacher.…

As the student, imagine that you are terrified to not only present the speech in front of your entire class, but to have to go through the process of picking a topic, researching it, organizing your speech, and practicing it as well. At the beginning of my communication class, this was how I felt about producing and giving speeches. I was nervous to talk in front of the class because I have always been very shy and have suffered from extreme speech apprehension. I also dreaded picking a topic and organizing my speeches as well, since I could never make up my mind and I was never good…

So when I first woke up I took a shower, and then I got out of the shower and blow dryed my hair. Once my hair was completely dried, I began to curl my hair so that it would stay curled throughout the day and if the curls fell I could easily fix them.…
