How does fear affect us? Fear is defined as “an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous,” and is usually associated with negative impacts on oneself or others. Fear has many different impacts on people and everyone handles them differently, according to what they see fit. So while fear does have some bad impacts, it also has good impacts on people. So with that being said, fear causes people to become prejudice and irrational, but it also causes people to unify in times of need. To begin, fear causes people to become prejudiced against others. A couple examples of this would be the anthrax scare in 2001 and the more recent Zika virus scare. Around 2001, people were becoming scared after Senator Tom Daschle received mail that tested positive for anthrax. People feared the idea of chemical warfare now, so everyone became unhinged. The average citizens didn’t realize the amount of anthrax needed to actually cause harm to some. Things became blown out of proportion according to Fox News, "It takes a lot of anthrax to make anybody sick and takes a lot more to kill somebody," said Michael Fumento, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute who is writing a book about biotechnology. "But it only takes a single spore for a person to test positive. The threat of anthrax is grossly overstated." People became so scared of anthrax that they wouldn’t even get their own mail. The fear of being exposed to it overwhelmed America with superstition. People acted without reason, without thought, and without evidence. Another example is the recent Zika scare. Citizens of the United States were becoming uneasy at the thought of a disease, that could cause deformities in children, entering the country. It blew up just like anthrax did. People become scared of an event or idea because it either goes against what they’ve been taught or because they don’t understand it. It’s easy for people to discriminate against others if they feel that they have a valid reason to. It’s easy for people to not think before acting. It’s also easy for fear to bring people together because they realize they need each other's support. Fear has many bad effects on people, but it also has a relative number of good effects
