(#2 & #1) It was a sound filled with the overcoming essence of dread and death It must have been infused with the caw that of a copse fowl and the hiss of a snake. What shall I do? Must I slay, divert, or simply run from this wretched beast? I see an exit. Would I make it, or would I be caught in its hideous jaws? (#3) No! It's too late! I can already feel the fear, a mortal terror at that, building up and threatening to consume every morsel and fiber of my very being. In the article “A Decade of Fear” Sam Robert explains how McCarthyism turned Americans against each other in the decade after World War II by creating fear on every single one of them, because they were either involved with Communism or knew someone who was. According to Robert “screenwriters, actors, directors, and producers were dragged before the House Un-American Activities Committee and asked to “name names” of colleagues who had Communist ties or sympathies” (par. 13). In other words, men and women were asked to expose friends and/or family who was associated with the practice of Communism. As a matter of fact, society did not really have a choice at that time, because the government was callous and did not care about their rebuttals.…

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Miller uses his writing to emphasize how people will manipulate fear in order to obtain power. Abigail Williams is a young girl who finds herself in a socially and sexually oppressive environment; she is on the low rung of society, because she is an orphan and is unmarried. After falling in love with an already married man she is even more powerless, because she cannot love him openly or even get him to acknowledge her. She sees this fear of witches and the devil, a constant in Salem, and uses it as support to get rid of Proctor’s wife. Abigail and the other girls know well that there were not any witches, clear from all their planted, false, and spectral evidence.…

Even the most devout believer can fear death because it is more of a universal fear – one that is hardwired to our minds. Some say that this fear follows from the fear of life but that is not the only cause why most of us fear death so much as to affect our daily lives.…

Perusing through the library for a non-fiction book to design a presentation on, I thought of following the easy route and picking a brain-related book, as neuroscience was my favorite topic. However, in a burst of ambition, I chose a self-help book, “The Gift of Fear”. Primarily choosing it because of the eye-catching title, I decided to borrow it as unlike most other self-help books that caution readers to just stay alert, this book revealed the importance of survival instincts and subconscious danger signals. From body language to unsolicited promises uttered by strangers, this book altered my perspective of viewing crimes. I began to pick up on tell tale signs that the crime committers emitted before the crime occurred while reading news…
