Nowadays the world progresses faster than ever. The nation has been swept by rapid developments in technology and inspiring social movements. Directors and artists notice these changes, and as a result, film adapts. The release date of a film can speak volumes about a film. It is a marker of all the elements available at a specific time to form the formal and social qualities of a film.…
The story plot in films such as “Edward Scissorhands” from well- known film director Tim Burton, have revolutionized over the years and have incorporated a large variety of visual and story line detail, in which viewers are far more intellectually challenged. There is no surprise that modern films have evolved an infinite amount of action compared to older cinematic films. Universal Horror films evolved between the 1920s through the 1950s. This involved incredible science fiction and horror films produced by Universal Studio Productions such as Frankenstein and Dracula to name a few. Over the years these gruesome fairy tales began to incorporate stronger detail and drama in their story plots.…
When I write,I try to capture in words, the half etched thoughts, the unformed silences ,the vaguely understood swirl of emotions all entangled with and undifferentiated from the chaotic images that flash and disappear. When I visualize, I try to capture,in images this time, those half etched thoughts, those unformed silences, those vaguely understood swirls of emotions entangled with and undifferentiated from the chaotic words that flash and disappear. An image, that has never been a word before except vaguely, while it was evolving in the mind, or, a word that has been an image only in the same conditions, stands by itself as the first representation of a reality(or fantasy) that has till then seen only the world of the mind from which it evolved. It is individualistic, unique and beyond judgement , like a new born baby.…
The authors' biography: I chose to write a critical account on an edited book entitled Fear, Anxiety, and National Identity: Immigration and Belonging in North American and western Europe edited by Nancy Foner and Patrick Simon. As the title indicates, the book is about the relationship that immigrants have with National Identity in western European countries and North America. When I read the title, the thought that came to my mind was that the issues raised and analysed by the authors in the book are current issues especially in this century where the place and role of immigrants has become more important than in the past. For instance, in the United States the Hispanic community has outnumbered the Whites in some states such as California.…
Have you ever watched a movie that left you jumping at every little sound? What about a movie that didn’t necessarily scare you, but left you with an uncomfortable feeling? After watching F. W. Murnau’s Nosferatu, I wasn’t scared, but more creeped-out. When he directed the movie in 1922, he used many different variables to give Nosferatu an eerie feeling. Murnau broke the typical vampire stereotype when he directed Nosferatu.…
Powerless African American parents beat their children out of the fear that one day they could lose their bodies. It was only after the birth of his son, that Coates was able to understand the love behind the grip of his mother’s hand. He understood what happens to parents who fear not just the criminals among them but the police who lord over them with all the moral authority of a protection racket. While explaining his realization and why so many black parents beat their children, Coates says, “Black people love their children with a kind of obsession. You are all we have, and you come to us endangered.…
Everyone loves watching classic movies, both horror and non horror, and enjoy every component of it. When movies of old do so well after many generations, some directors make remakes or sequels to them. Sometimes they work out and sometimes they don't. The Nightmare on Elm Street is not the only movie that has been retold, and it's not the only one that is often compared with its newer…
Film has been a form of communication for over a century. And its due to this fact that artificial life trying to find humanity and aliens using humans for repopulation has become classics in everyone’s home. Ridley Scott, the director of the films, is known for his auteur style that has a strong nightmare like feel. Through the analysis of the films Blade Runner (1982) and Alien (1979), Scott embeds his own ideology of our future being ‘grim, dark and polluted’ (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2018) through various film techniques, that expressively show his auteur style. Ridley Scott was born in 1937, before the major modernisation period.…
Horror films have brought up a fear in us we didn’t know we possessed until after we finished watching it. Simultaneously it’s a mechanism that we tend to rely to allow us feel safe more specifically using the horror genre to confront some of the basic concerns of modern society. I disagree with Stephan King’s notion of why we crave horror movies instead we posses paranoia because we live haunted to the ideology of these horrific acts coming to life. To emphasize, most of us, we watch horror movies as stated in the essay to show we’re not afraid, even if we might be petrified inside.…
There is no species on the earth which does not experience fear, for fear is pivotal to survival. All humans and most species of animals fear loud sounds and falling. But humans grow to learn fear: fear of clowns, spiders, heights, water, insects, et cetera. Americans, after the attack on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, learned to fear an entire group of people. Like other fears can be exploited by others, this national fear was exploited by the United States Government.…
Ringu is a 1998 Japanese horror film directed by Hideo Nakata and adapted from Koji Suzuki’s novel of the same name. It follows a TV reporter, who attempts to solve a string of strange murders, whose cause is believed to be a cursed video tape. The movie opens with two teenagers talking about a videotape that kills anyone who watches it within seven days. It is also revealed that one of the girls, Tomoko, has seen it and she dies very soon after the conversation. Her aunt Reiko, a TV reporter and the movie’s protagonist, hears rumors of several teenager deaths from Tomoko’s circle of friends and realizes that they were all on the island of Izu when they watched the tape.…
As a young boy, I was unable to realize the true effect that film adaptations have on imagination and the correlation between a director and a…
To relate how nostalgia is used in film we must first look at the many elements that are involved in film creation. These include the production, shooting techniques and casting. Restorative nostalgia as mentioned earlier in this research, be an ‘important segmentation variable’ when it comes to choosing locations and content for modern cinema (Seongseop & Sangkyun 2017, p.1). Throughout their research Seongseop & Sangkyun (2017) document how an audience can relate to specific locations and landmarks featured in some of their favourite films. These elements also provoked the feeling of restorative nostalgia within the audiences.…
Fears are irrational, yet every human being has them. Fears are adaptive human responses, but when left untreated; those minor fears can turn into something unimaginable. These fears transform into exaggerated irrational fears which are known to be called phobias. There are now 600 recognized phobias by the medical profession and there’s more waiting to be discovered. Fears and phobias can be managed and cured.…
From the very outset, Dudley Andrew probes the mysteries surrounding the loose use of the term adaptation in film. He gives brief and yet a wide scope introduction about the intricate usage of adaptation and its representation to film studies. Adaptation is akin to “interpretation theory, for in a strong sense adaptation is the appropriation of a meaning from a prior text” (Braudy and Cohen 453). For decades,…
