Fear, Conflict And Savagery In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies

Lord of The Flies Analysis William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies surrounds a group of young boys stranded on an island after a plane crash. With no adults or sense of authority present the boys must build there own civilization which results in fear, conflict, and savagery. From the beginning to end of the story the element of fear is a driving force for the boys’ actions. At first the fear of being alone is present, then fear of a beast, and finally a fear of loss of power. Fear is one of the strongest emotions that influences the way characters think and act. Throughout Lord of the Flies Golding develops complex characters to contribute to the establishment of the central theme that fear controls behavior and causes the savage nature within to arise. In this statement Piggy proves to be a rational thinker as he acknowledges the reality of the situation. Ralph is depicted as the natural leader and shows his determination and optimism. Ralph is the heart of the society because he calls the boys together and begins to assign positions and jobs such as building a fire. He is confident that a ship will find them and claims his father will come to the rescue.
