Hope can set you free.’ Is also displayed through Red. When Red is released out of Shawshank into the real world he is constantly in fear when confronted with life, because Red had gone so long without outliving a regular life outside bars. Routine was all that Red knew now and felt fear without it. “That’s what a whole life in prison does for you, young man. It turns everyone in a position of authority into a master, and you into every master’s dog”. Red had even caught himself a couple of times thinking about what he could commit to go back to Shawshank. He almost had no hope left at all, except for one piece of hope; finding that stonewall Andy told him about. When Red finally goes to the stonewall it set him free. The letter Andy left for him had filled him with hope and in doing so Red began to live again as his final lines in the film express his hope and excitement. “I hope I can make it across the border. “I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. When you fear that you will fail it can stop you from trying to achieve your goals and dreams. Fear is how most inmates in Shawshank felt and how they lived. Most inmates were in so much fear they would not try simple tasks like getting their high school education. This is seen when Tommy is hesitant to be taught by Andy because he fears he will fail in the end. The inmates constant fear allowed warden Norton to run a corrupt prison as well as it allowed Heywood to beat inmates to death as all inmates lacked motivation to do anything about it and speak up. But once Andy comes along things start to change in Shawshank the library is given books and music and the warden Norton and Heywood start to lose their power over the prisoners. Although the warden Norton tried to make Andy fear him through numerous longs trips to the solitaire and the murder of Tommy but Andy never broke. After Andy exposes the wardens corrupt prison to police Norton takes his own life and Red says “besides the bullet, the last thing that went through Norton 's head was to wonder how Andy ever got the best of him”. It was Andys hope that had gotten the best of him and Nortons own fear had held himself prisoner to him.

In Conclusion the film Shawshank redemption demonstrates the power hope and fear have on peoples actions and their fates. This is displayed through its characters and how hope set them free and gave them

Introduction A journey is often more important than the destination you reach; a popular message that is represented in both the films Cool Hand Luke and Shawshank Redemption. Both of these movies focus on the themes of determination and self worth, even while being set in the bleak lives of prisoners in intense prisons with seemingly no hope. Imagine this. You’re paralyzed, unable to do anything the way you want; unable to achieve new goals, to try new things, or to simply live your life the way you want to because you are restricted. Many times we have a similar reaction to fear. Fear can motivate us to an extent, if used correctly and in small amounts. But more often than not we let fear take over and control us, stopping us from doing what we actually want to achieve.…

Now, I know not everyone has seen this movie; I would even go as far to say it is a “dad movie”. It depicts how corruption can influence and even ruin many lives, just for the benefit of someone else. The movie comes a few years after the United States got ‘tough on crime,” which led to massive increases in people entering prison for small crimes, that before wouldn’t have been punished as severely before. Darabont saw how the justice department took advantage of the 13th amendment and saw an opportunity to make a film that portrays an analogous situation to what was happening all across the country in the 90s. The Shawshank Redemption followed one man and depicted the corruption that he faced in prison, but the film is supposed to be a metaphor for the struggles that each individual who was affected by the “tough on crime” era and looking at the time of the release one can connect the two. The movie even depicts when new evidence is introduced, appropriate measures aren’t always followed, and when you link this to real life, many people were charged in the past for crimes that didn’t have compelling evidence and imprisoned many innocent…

The image people often conjure up when the word fear is uttered is similar among the many. It is a negative, unwanted, and evil picture which further proves that fear is a negative and harmful emotion because it causes one who is induced with it to make hasty and rash decisions without a second of thought. It is an emotion that works its magic in a way that no other emotion really does, it comes and goes whenever it is called just like any other emotion. However, when it arrives it carries the fate of that person's life, even if it is only for a couple of seconds. In both the Crucible and The Scarlet Letter, fear is shown to be doing just that, clouding the minds of many characters and impairing their judgement.…

The Warden ended up committing suicide and I feel that was the ultimate penitence that the Warden had to pay in order for his crimes to be forgiven.…
