Between the months of February 1692 and and May 1693 in Massachusetts there was a up bringing of rumors of witchcraft in the small town of Salem. In “ The Crucible “ by Arthur Miller revenge is shown through characters, fear is shown through plot , and hysteria is shown through theme. Fear is shown through plot by the lie that has gone too far and is ruining people's lives on telling the truth. In one instance John Proctor is taking Mary Warren to court to confess she lied about everything and so the girls. “ I cannot lie no more. I am with god, I am with god.” ( act 3 , 97, Miller) when this is having Mary knows she must tell the truth so she goes to court and tells the judge it was pretense meaning it was pretend and breaks down crying. One example is when Abigail accuses Elizabeth Proctor of being in witchcraft knowing she will be executed when the courts find out. “She wants be dead John, you know it ( act 2 , 57, Miller) When this happens Abigail knows that means Elizabeth will be hung and she can have John for herself. One other example is when John is in court where he is just done the lies that the town has believes and confesses himself that he is in witchcraft to not his wife he only does this because Elizabeth doesn’t need to be hung he is just trying to stand up for his family and for the town he knows Abigail only did that because she believed that if Elizabeth was gone she would have John all to herself so that’s why he confessed because he knew no one would win .
Throughout this play all kinds of feelings are thrown at us so when showing revenge as a way to get back at people , fear through scaring a town into only rumors , and hysteria through the whole aspect of the play a town that hears something and accuse their own neighbors of being deceitful always be careful with emotions people take them to the
