Tris Prior lives in a world which is in the future. The place she calls home is divided into 5 factions, all believing in different things to live by. When each child nears adulthood, he or she must choose a faction leave their families and stay there for life. Tris chooses Dauntless. Those who join Dauntless follow bravery. The Dauntless“Believe in ordinary acts of bravery in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another” (Roth 206). Roth ues the beliefs of Dauntless to show it is great to stand up for others and it is brave to do so. Helping someone in need is an amazing thing to do even when the person is not asking for help. Even though Tris chooses Dauntless, she is a Divergent and will never be able to fit into just one faction. Tris is told that she must conceal this news because it is bad to not fit in with everyone else. Knowing this threatens everyone she loves. To save the people she loves she has to learn how to deal with her fear. Tris is told, "becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it, that's the point." (Roth 239). Roth uses this as a teaching moment. When reading it makes people think about their fears, and if they are in control. It is not possible to become fearless, and she uses Tris and Four portray this. Tris overcoming her fears is a huge part of the novel. She has to do many things she is afraid of in …show more content…
Roth changes it up, to set in fear. She has the buildings crumbling, and everything falling apart, she also includes a weird new government system. Though we never really get to see how the government really works which is another way Roth makes this book filled with fear. When the people who control everyone's life don't tell the truth about what is actually happening, it gives us more reasons to understand why there is so much fear for Tris to overcome.Tris shows us this when she says “the roads where I live are still cracked and patchy, and it's not safe to drive on them”(Roth 4). By giving us this information Roth gives a sense of uneasiness about this crumbling town, it makes the reader think about what it would be like to live in this town. The imagery that Roth uses makes this place very clear, and it is not a place most would want to live. When visiting a town or a place in where everything is falling apart in real life it does not give a good feeling. Roth also makes it clear that the people who live in this town are meant to be one way, if they are not that way they are not wanted. This in some ways is connected to the world we live in today. With this Roth makes the readers think about how they treat people. That is another way she sets in fear. We think the government, in the novel is horrible because they don't want divergents which are the people who are different, yet in our world there are many

Fear is a catalyst for both social decline and for social reform. Fear can control people and cause a social decline as exemplified by the townsfolk who lived on Maple street in , “The Monsters are due on Maple street,” they didn’t understand what was causing so much commotion in their neighborhood and when it came down to trying to figure things out the people just began to turn on each other and kill each other for these ‘monsters’ were the people themselves and they feared what they didn’t understand, so they resorted to violence. A way fear can cause a sort of social reform would be in the stoning story where the people control a population outbreak by stoning a person to death. This is an example of a social reform as the population problem…

The theme of fear can be further supported through the use of figurative language. While reading “The Seventh Man,” it can be noted that a large majority of the comparisons and exaggerations were used to convey a dark or troublesome topic. For instance, the author uses the following sentence to portray a suspenseful mood in the opening paragraph. “The small group that huddled in a circle could hear the wind tearing through the darkness outside, heading west.” When I read the phrase, “tearing through the darkness,” the mood that is automatically related to the story is cold, dark, and gloomy, which carries on throughout the rest of the story.…
