Being an anxious individual since childhood, I am quite familiar with this emotion and the mutilation it can instigate. When I do experience anxiety, or panic attacks, I soothe myself in diverse approaches: Calling my fiancé, crying, deep breathing, or gently condoling myself through wording. As Goleman discussed, “Worries are almost always expressed in the mind’s ear, not its eye – that is, in words, not images – a fact that has significance for controlling worry” (Goleman, 2005, p. 66). Anxiety transpires in the mind; it stands as a battle amongst logic and prodigious fear. Similarly to other emotions, it persists not as the emotion that rests important, but rather the response to that emotion. Healthy, or positive, ways to deal with anxiety contain: positive self-talk, communication with others, and breathing. Positive ways to relieve anxiety converge on cleansing the mind of negativity, while initiating positive thoughts. On the other hand, unhealthy, or negative, ways to deal with anxiety include: drug or alcohol abuse, self-harm, or physical violence. Negative ways to relieve anxiety do not essentially relieve anxiety, but rather conceal the emotion. These attempts merely seize anxiety from the mind for a time period, before remerging; individuals who relieve anxiety these ways often feel worse after they participate in these activities.
