On November 2nd I attended a presentation given by David Eubank, a former U.S Army Special Forces and Ranger Officer, and an alumnus of Texas A&M University. Currently, he is the director for the Free Burma Rangers (FBR), an organization that offers humanitarian aid to those in the Burma, Kurdistan, and Sudan war zone. While FBR has no religious or racial denomination, David himself is a Christian and believes that his being a follower of Jesus is what has led him to organizing FBR. David emphasized the importance of faith, love, and humility when providing aid to others. FBR has 3 rules for those wanting to join: the first is that, whatever one wants to do, they must do it with love in their heart. For FBR, “love has no motives” or religion; …show more content…
The second rule for FBR is that all of their volunteers must be able to read and write in English, and it is not required that volunteers speak another language. The third rule is that their volunteers must have courage—if a

In his 2012 article for The New Yorker, “Atonement,” Dexter Filkins recounts his time spent in Iraq and explains how he helped connect Lu Lobello, a veteran suffering from severe PTSD, with the Kachadoorians, an Armenian family. While in Iraq, the Kachadoorians suffered devastating casualties and injuries at the hands of Lobello’s unit, Fox Company. Even though the United States Government determined the civilian deaths and injuries were justified, Lobello and many other members of Fox Company developed PTSD from the harm they caused. In this situation, most of the involved parties, including the U.S. government, held different conceptions of the right and wrong action to take. This difference in opinions is caused by the cloudy nature of morality…

    Sidra Zimmerman Ministry Project

The People and the Situation As was first mentioned in my ministry group project proposal, the group I chose was my own small group. When the project first started, it consisted of roughly 10 men and women, most members of my Southern Baptist church who meet weekly to suss through the week’s sermon together. Interestingly enough, most of us had been raised in some semblance of a Christian home, though our experience within that “Christian” community varied.…

The second vignette discusses Father John Finian’s operations with the Burmese. Father Finian’s interactions with the Burmese are an example of the SOF imperative, "Operate with and Through.” He arrived in Burma in 1952 to oversee the Catholic Mission. He viewed communism as evil and vowed to do his part to defeat it. Father Finian conducted unconventional warfare (UW) activities against the Communist party by working with and through local Burmese.…

The Florida School of Deaf and Blind(FSDB) is located in St. Augustine, Florida and was established in 1882 by Thomas Coleman. This school has had a positive impact on the Deaf community with being one of the first schools in the state of Florida. FSDB has been named as one of the top deaf and blind schools in the nation; with a lot of well-known individual graduates. FSDB, I believe is very well off considering they start with pre-k and go all the way up to teaching young adults. From reading on their website, they take this school very seriously with “high qualified teachers who hold dual certification in both education of students who are deaf/hard of hearing or blind/visually impaired, and in their specific academic content areas” (http://www.fsdb.k12.fl.us/).…

And to be known as Christian peacemakers in a country that is largely Christian based, that just happens to have the largest military budget in the world, and asks for it to be under Gods name is also rather daunting. When saying such a phrase as Christian Peacemaker Teams, be aware, it could be consequential to your future. CPT was started in 1984, by a Mennonite man named Ron Sider. Sider had a vision, to give peacemakers…

“Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country”-Charles E Weller. The call to action is one of decisive and prudent mentality that starts with a simple “yes”, yet time and time again, hesitancy hinders the simple stimulus that could inadvertently change lives. Partly due to fear and uncertainty, the other majority derives from fondness for the shallow, calm waters of life, but unless a strong gale sets human immobility into motion, there will be no call to action. Well, at least not in a way shown by the Atlanta Boys Choir. The willingness to act on social inequality and the true generosity of the ABC was my impetus to comprehend the imperfections of my vicinity.…

Learning about the great people throughout our history who have witnessed the suffering of our neighbors and acted on the compassion they felt for them is something I truly love seeing. Seeing these great people who most think are too busy with their lives to worry about others being unaffected by these unjust social structures and live by this false definition of success which has been branded on us by society, is something I cannot understand. Then there are those who go with the suffering and the oppressed and fight for change. When I was a kid, my parents taught me to live for others, to be selfless instead of selfish; my childhood was better because of this. These people, who have the guts to stand at the foot of the cross, are people…

Bishop Tutu’s Noble Peace Prize Lecture literally screams of the Social Justice Tradition. He begins by proclaiming that because there is no justice in S. Africa, there is turmoil; there is no peace. Like Amos, Bishop Tutu’s war cry is “justice for all! And, like Amos, Bishop Tutu’s words are direct, pointed, and forceful to demonstrate “how much God cares about justice” This excerpt demonstrates the horizontal movement of loving thy neighbor. Foster describes neighbor as simply someone in need regardless of where the person resides.…

In Strauch’s biography “Agape Leadership”, we learn about the life of R.C. Chapman, a well-respected man who held a reputation for Christlike love and deep-rooted faith. As a result of the way he exhibited Christ, Chapman influenced hundreds of people for the gospel and thousands of people respected and admired him. Strauch describes Chapman’s method of Christian education perfectly within the title of his book: “agape”. Agape is a word that the early Christian’s created to describe the type of love that Christ showed to the church: a mind-blowing, wholly sacrificial love. Chapman sacrificed himself for the benefit of the gospel.…
