At first they were really close and they had two sons, one of which became a successful biologist of international reputation. Unfortunately their marriage wasn't so happy. Marie became resentful of Faure's frequent absences and his love affairs, while she remained at home. Although Faure was an incredible composer, he did not earn enough money as one. To support his family, he spent most of his time as a piano and harmony teacher. His works were not worth much to those who purchased them. In 1920, at the age of 75, Gabriel Faure decided to retire from the Conservatoire due to his increasing deafness and his poor health. Despite his bad health and heavy smoking, he continued to help young composers and was honored by many people. Gabriel Faure died in Paris from pneumonia on November 4th, 1924. He was given a state funeral at the Eglise de la Madeleine and was buried in the Passy Cemetery in Paris. He did live a long life, exceeding those of other composers such as Debussy by six years.
