Faulkner's The Art Of Cruelty: The First Vietnam War

Decent Essays
At first, the painting just portrays a war in general: the cruelty of the intruders, sufferings of the powerless, ruined building, and fire. But, the painting also conveys hopelessness. Hope is nowhere seen in the victim`s faces. They have no means of fighting back as depicted by their nakedness. It seems like they already give up their lives.

The vivid red color of the little girl’s dress naturally draws the eye towards the center of the poster first. The young child clutches on to a doll which already falls halfway under the shadow of the swastika. The doll signifies her innocence and childhood and the shadow suggests that the war will cause a loss of innocence and a termination of her childhood. This appeals to the protective instinct within adults as it amplifies the danger of the little girl’s circumstances, using her worried facial expression to further stress the urgency of the threat of war.…

After reading the first four sections of “The Vietnam Wars” I can infer that the Vietnamese are extremely persistent people that are not likely to surrender. I can infer this because of several pieces of information, the first being the actions of the Vietnamese people during the 1945-1954 battles against the French and Americans. During this war, the Vietnamese had significantly less technology than their current opponents, but instead of surrendering to the French they made use of their land and defeated the anti-communists. The second piece of information that helped me infer this is simply the dates of the war against the Chinese. If Vietnam was not extremely persistent and kept hope for independence, the constant battle against the Chinese…

In his Nobel Prize speech, William Faulkner said that it is the writer’s duty to write about “love and honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice” (par. 3) and that anything other than those “problems of the spirit” are not worth writing about. The ways he lived up to the standards he set were through the characters in his book The Unvanquished. The book takes place in the 1860’s-70’s centered around the maturation of a young boy named Bayard. His resilience, maturity, and basic capability to function as a person of free will is tested numerous times throughout the stories. “The poet’s, the writer’s, duty is to write about these things.…
