Faulkner's Description Of Emily Death

Decent Essays
In the beginning of the story, Faulkner mentions Emily’s death, which gives the reader a subtle kick. We are forced to begin with the thought of something painful and reflect back to a memory or experience of death. It is a powerful element that anchors the story throughout each chapter. The description of Emily by the narrator paints her to be a dull woman who is big, bloated, and doesn’t take care of herself. It is almost as if she is dead on her feet or dead in spirit.
