The two authors created a semi-structured interview guide that was based on previous research on fatigue and the SEIPS model of the work system. Questions from the guide included personal experiences, sources, and barriers and facilitators of fatigue. The guide also addressed questions pertaining to coping within the nursing work system, nurse-identified consequences and potential solutions to fatigue. The instruments used were appropriate for collecting data for the research purpose. Researchers use themselves as tools or instruments to gain information from key informants to obtain the most accurate and beneficial data for the study (Schmidt and Brown, 2015). In qualitative inquiry, the researcher is the instrument (Patton, 1990, p.14). The term trustworthiness relates to the degree of trust, or confidence that the readers have in the results of the study (Schmidt and Brown, 2015). The trustworthiness of the data discussed is evident within the research article. The two authors each independently coded the interviews while they met weekly to ensure that the coding match throughout the entirety of each transcript.
