During the day the tides of the sea is a reflection of his emotional turmoil; an up and down motion. At night, he escapes to his books in his room, to ease the turmoil and find his happy place. This implies the father likes solitude and does not want to interact with his family as this following quote indicates, “went into his room and the radio blared forth the next day’s weather forecast.” It seems like he wants an out but it’s too late.
