Father miguel hidalgo or as his full name was Cristobal Hidalgo y Costilla, was a priest in the village of Dolores, sympathized with the indians and mestizos and joined a secret society to work for the mexican independence. On September 16, 1810, father rang the church bell in dolores and urged his parishioners to fight for freedom. Thousands joined his army, but with clubs and farm tools as their weapons, they were no match against the spanish soldiers. Father miguel hidalgo was an important figure in history because father miguel hidalgo y costilla is known as the man who was called upon mexicans to revolt against their spanish rulers in their town. Father Miguel Hidalgo was born May 8, 1753. Near guanajuato Mexico. He died July 30 1811
