Each character feels alone, the Marquis at his home, Bernarda on the plantation, Sierva in her cell, and Delaura in the hospital. Every character in Of Love and Demons never really experiences true love except for Sierva and Cayetano Delaura at the end of the book. The Marquis never loved or was never loved by his wife, Bernarda found what she thought was love in Judas but it was not truly, and so goes the cycle. The dangers of passivity are also explored. Gabriel Marquez’s unique choice of diction and literary allusion creates an allegorical portrait of ideas such as love and death. The choice of diction and literary allusion allowed for Marquez to combine realistic historical narration with fantasy thus creating some of the most notorious stories in the genre known as magical realism. In the story “Death Constant Beyond Love”, one can see the how Marquez’s choice of diction and literary allusion allowed for him to create the fantastical juxtaposition between ideas and philosophies of the main character, Senator Onesimo Sanchez. Senator Onesimo Sanchez cannot seem to accept the inevitable fact of death even though he has previously read the stoic Marcus Aurelius’ 4th Meditation.…

In class, we defined free will as making the conscious decisions of the choices in one’s life, and fate as very one-dimensional, where one’s outcome is already pre-determined (Theodicy PPT). In a story where God is present, it is hard to decide whether following what you believe to be Gods path is fate or free will, which is challenged in The Sparrow. Furthermore, The Sparrow follows the new model of sin, where the focus is on the good in everyone rather than the evil.…
