In this play, Oedipus is ascertainedabout the cause of the uncanny curse in his kingdom of Thebes. He discovers more than just the reason forthe curse on his land, he finds out about the destiny of his life and the consequences that follow. Jocasta, his wife, tells a story about her son who is intended to kill King Laius and how instead of raising him as a normal child they take matters into their own hands. This baby boy is sent to a mountain to be killed, so that the oracle cannot be fulfilled. This story is thought to be true and is used to prove that freewill does exist. Instead of being killed on the mountain, he is thrown into the forest and is foundby Polybus. He is taken to Corinth and is raised from an infant. Oedipus continues to harass Teiresias. Knowing Oedipus’ fate he foreshadows in anger, saying that Oedipus, or the murderer of King Laius, will soon be tapping his way around with a stick. Most blind people have a stick which enables them to feel their surroundings. In the end Oedipus finds out that he did adulterates the course by marrying his mother and relations in bed with the knowledge of Jocasta having children. He is so embarrassed that he gouges his own eyes out with a brooch on his mother’s robe. It didn’t matter to Jocasta because she commits suicide. Through trying on escaping fate, he still ends up on the same
