By definition, the word fate means the development of events beyond a person’s control. Fate is something we have absolutely no control over. Some people would like to think they have full control over their lives. In reality it is fate, it’s definitely something many people should believe in.
Fate occurs to us when we least expect it. The 3 rioters did not think they were going to find the old man, and have him tell them were death was. (Pardoners Tale pg. 172) It works in the most mysterious ways. The rioters also didn’t expect to find a pot of money and gold under the tree, they said it was fate. (Pardoners Tale pg.172-173). Fate controlled multiple events the rioters had experienced that day.
During the story of the Iliad the gods helped play a role along with fate for Hector and Achilles (The Iliad pg. 86). Achilles believed that it was fate that he killed Hector. And the gods put Achilles in a position where his fate was tested when it came to returning Hectors’ body. Fate also has control over the beginning and ending point of your life. It was fate that the Knight bumped into the old women in the woods on the way to tell the Queen what he thought was the correct answer. The old women told him what it really was, without the correct answer the Knight would’ve died. (The Wife of Bath pg. 185-186).

We do, we make our choices and control the outcomes. Perhaps Beowulf knew the entire time that his sword wasn’t going to work during the battle with Grendel’s mom. He decided he wanted to take it either way and see if maybe he would win. Beowulf was losing the fight when he found the sword made by giants that he could use to kill Grendel’s mom. (Beowulf pg. 59) That was all fate, fate knew it was not his time to die and provided the weapon for him to defend himself. It was fate the grand ball of yarn was not just a string on that day. Fate had a big part in Beowulf’s life and

Self-fulfilling prophecies, a term coined by psychologist Robert Merton, function under the idea that prophecies in of themselves have no power, but nonetheless come to pass solely due to a person’s belief in it. This phenomenon suggests that prophecies have no otherworldly or spiritual power, but are rather purely psychological. If awareness of the prophecy alone has the power to drastically change a person’s life choices, then it is the individual’s own self who is unknowingly manipulating their own fate. This occurrence demonstrates the impact of the perception of our fate. Whether the prophecy involves rising up to an impossible challenge, or failure and ruin; these perceptions can greatly impact one’s decisions based on how susceptible…

When a warrior dies in Homer’s Iliad and Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War, he loses his ability to take control of his own life. Having surrendered to his fate (moira), the duty to protect the fallen warrior falls upon his comrades. These warriors feel that they have a moral duty to protect the bodies of the fallen, particularly those who died in service to their communities and cities (poleis). If a man does not die in the line of duty, however, his body may not receive the same treatment as the warrior killed in battle. The treatment of the bodies of the dead profoundly impacts the respective communities in the two texts and strongly reflects the moral state of the communities and their individuals on a much larger scale.…

In today’s world, fate is considered to be a human-made construct that describes the succession of events in life that cannot be controlled; it is the opposite of free will. However, to the ancient Greeks, fate could absolutely be controlled. The humans often clashed with the Greek gods when trying to secure their destiny; humans believed they had free will, but the gods knew they had complete control over the people. This confrontation between humans and gods is seen throughout The Odyssey. The gods frequently alter situations the humans are in to change their outcomes while the people try to deal with their new situations and take back the control over their own lives.…

    I. Before his birth, Oedipus was assigned to a miserable life, but his stubborn attempt to fix his destiny led to his life becoming all the worse; his exile was not destined by fate but was a product of his own actions. A. The fact that Oedipus marries his mother and kills his father cannot be blamed on him because his fate was set before he was born. 1. Tiresias tells Oedipus that the prophecy made when he was born has come true and that he will “be detected in his very heart of home: his children’s father and their brother, son and husband to his mother, bed-rival to his father and assassin” (230).…
